Great strategy game that is challenging but not too complex. Still holds up for a 7 year-old game.

EDIT: As of May 30th, 2016 OVERKILL has reacquired the rights to Payday and has since removed micro transactions. This is infinitely commendable and I am very happy for them! However, I have personally moved on from Payday 2 but I would now RECOMMEND anyone who hasn't picked it up to give it a shot.

I am looking forward to Payday 3 now that the creative team is free once again. :)

"It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently." -Warren Buffet

I stress to you that this is not a game review, but an open criticism and protest to the latest update in Payday 2.

TL;DR

Recent update introduces new weapon skins which are not just cosmetic but also improves in-game weapons stats and performance. Although the stat boosts are minimal at the moment, I discourage people from supporting this business model as it will be detrimental for players in the long-term and may inspire other companies to follow in this path. Never should you be able to pay for power.

OVERKILL will continue to screw you if you do not stop this now.

Long Vers.

With the release of Day 1 Crimefest 2015 - "The Blackmarket Update", The fears from the community has become a reality. Payday 2 will be joining the ranks of Team Fortress 2 and Counter-strike:Global Offensive by introducing in-game locked "Crates", that can be obtained by playing the game, with the only way to unlock them and obtain the weapon skins within is to pay for a "key" with real money ($2.50 / €2.19 each) via Steam Wallet or Credit Card. This is NOT the problem. All the other games listed have proven that they can be fully enjoyed without spending a dime on the cosmetic skins. The actual trouble that is exclusive to Payday 2's model is these weapon skins also boosts your weapon's stats that improve the weapon in gameplay. Giving players who pay for them an objective advantage over players who don't.

The current stat boosts (from what I understand) are minimal. Keep in mind that Payday 2 is a Co-Op game (unlike the other 2 listed) and not a Player vs Player game . The issue is if we support this practice, they will continue pumping out these weapon skins with stat boosts and eventually, to drive sales, these boosts will no longer be minimal but rather game enhancing. The most worrying of all is the thought of other companies joining in on this type of terrible standard.

For a long time, the Community have voiced their concern on the under looming pay-to-win stigma derived from the overwhelming number of weapon DLCs released over the years. Many predicted the projected trend, in the way OVERKILL (the game developers) conducts their business model, will eventually lead to a full-blown pay-to-win game. Although it was fun to think about, I never thought any company in present day, especially on Steam, would implement something that is essentially business suicide akin to dragging your companies' reputation across the mud.

It especially stung many since David Goldfarb, Game Director of Payday 2 who left OVERKILL in June of 2014, was on record in an interview from 2013 said when asked if OVERKILL anticipated putting micro transactions in the game: "No. No. God, I hope not. Never. No.". Though he has no role in any of the current debacle

Players hate pay-to-win models and avoid them like the plague. How do you expect to be competitive in this market when so many games offer a fair and cheaper alternative for the same or higher level of enjoyment?

The irony of all this: The update was introduced during Crimefest, an annual month-long event organized by the developers as a celebratory occasion that initiated challenges for players to overcome as a united community for a common goal. Never have I seen the community more torn apart than this day.

I will no longer support OVERKILL until they thoroughly address their current business model and subsequently improve on it.
