Most of the negative reviews are malding over solos or people who didn't even take a moment to figure things out.

Game has greatly improved in the 1.0 patch, with a far greater density of interesting fights, less punishing to queue with randoms, and allows you to catch up later on and win instead of your defeat being sealed 15 minutes ago.

It may be hopping on market trends, but it shows serious promise! Fun gameplay, decently balanced even this early on, no rage-inducing mechanics, and with some great new spins on the genre that encourage combat instead of having people hiding until there's 3 people left. 100% recommended.

Hi-Rez is known to mess up their games royally but they always start off real good. Until then, I recommend this even now in its incredibly unfinished state because the core gameplay is fun and has lots of variety. As of writing this (6/5/18) it can only be played in squads (matchmaking or friends) but with the player influx this Steam Release gives, solo queue will certainly return very soon.
