i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate this game (i love this game)

The type of game where you focus more on the story than the gameplay. Good thing it's got pretty artwork + beautiful story about life, love & grief. Gameplay-wise, not only are the puzzles pretty good & simple, their designs add details to the narrative!

Solid casual narrative game. Only problem is that it's short & left me wanting more of the story.

While I can appreciate all the new things it's trying, it ultimately feels too short & lacking so many features that makes past Lego games fun.

The open world system: I can appreciate that it's being incorporated into a narrative-driven Lego game, even if it falls short of its potential. The worlds felt both crowded & barren at the same time. The distances between important spots & collectibles are too awkward to utilise the vehicles all the time but purely running around can be tiresome.

Narrative: One of the weakest thing about the game. Unlike most Lego games that basically recap stories but with a wackier twist, this one is an extremely brief & loose adaptation of the movie. The first few boss battles were fun, so it's really disappointing that the finale was a rushed cutscene instead of one final grand boss battle.

Characters & abilities: You know how in past Lego games the characters have individuality (& usually there's a few characters that are super OP they help u breeze through the replay)? The characters you play as in this game doesn't matter because they're all essentially just different skins of the same character with no difference in abilities.

For example, in the first Lego Movie Videogame, only Batman can use the grapple but in this sequel, literally anyone can as long as you have the grapple gun equipped. You would play with a limited pre-selected team in your first playthrough then assemble a team yourself with all abilities available during the replay. In this game, that doesn't matter as long as you have the right tools in your inventory which means it's unnecessary to switch between any characters at all most of the time.

My sultan kept granting the marshalship to his vassals who are imprisoned by enemy kingdoms, while here I am, one out of the three remaining lords who are free, trying to single-handedly imprison as much counts as I can. Just when I captured more than 5 enemy lords, the sultan declares truce and I have to free these lords I defeated.

Didn't expect this game to be as therapeutic as it was puzzling when I first bought it. Few of Dr. Glenn Pierce's recordings are also inspiring and reassuring, especially as I progressed towards the end. One play-through wouldn't be enough because of how some puzzles can be solved in multiple ways, that is how solid the game mechanics are. Overall, just a fun time playing the game.

By the time you read this review, the devs probably already put so many new contents and quality of life update for free. Forget its release controversies, just watch Internet Historian's video on YouTube for how much the game has changed since.
