i purchased Rust in the summer of 2013.
the first day i played it, about 4 hours in i had made myself a little 2 square house. had a fire, a furnace, and was doing alright, though i hadnt seen another player yet. little did i know i built my base right at the bottom of a place called Hangar. on some night in the game i was crafting myself a revolver and heard a knock at the door, or rather... a ticking. i was then very welcomes to two small explosions blowing down my door and gunfire coming through.

i rage quit

fast foward a year, the summer of 2014
i had gained some hours now. i played on a friends server, i got to enjoy the luxxuries of making armor, guns, and being on the other side of the explosion. howver, i havnt been on many "raids" more like demolishing empy bases and shooting some sleepers. much of the time i spend was on quiet pve servers or low populations that got along well. untill i came to a place called Smiley Town. the first thing i did was open chat and say "anyone wana team up" to which some replied "yes, and i have a friend too" we met up just south of the tankers and made some small bases, each of us our own little houses, and then a fourth "community" building. we opened it for trade and such with the other locals. by the next weekend there were no longer 3 of us, there were 6, everyone had assembled towering wood structures, and the community building had turned from a happy, open walled trace centre, into a fortified metal prison for holding loot and players alike. the villaged was surrounded by wood and spike fencing, and camfires were kept atop watch towers. we became that of a server police, for there was an unspoken policy not to kill on sight, and it was kept by the word and actions of other players. fights at first were a shot here and there then a stern talking to, eventualy evolving into groups and clans that shoot and attempt to controll such areas, fights began lasting hours long; days in game, so long as both sides could produce enough ammo.

lets move another month ahead
one of our men is now a mod on the server, we had added several people to our group, the core of wich being the original 6, then 4 that had houses inside our ould village, and 5 with housing elsewhere on the map. the group became known as "admin village" though we did not pick that title ourselves. the fencing had gone from one, to two, then now 5 layers of large spike fences surrounding the entire metal vally and watch towers within resource hole, which now was known on the server as admania. roles had changed, those who protected people and chased after pvp thirsty, are now out raiding and looting, and eventually just leveling bases for no reason.... we started going through 300 c4 a night, 1500 on weekends alone. pretty easy when there is now 20 people dedicated to farming alone. only about half way through the month another clan, with about the same numbers, had started to rise, and at first we held a tenative peace. pranks were pulled, snipers hitting out the front doors of eachothers base, but there was never a raid during that wipe.

month 3 of Smiley Town
our mod friend is now the server owner, and many others are now moderators
admania had renamed itself to the Iroquois, and we dropped many of the players from our group to keep from otheres thinking admins abused their powers when we just played like everyone else. we and our rival faction now stood in a cold war, many of the leaders friends well enough to play with eachother, but on different servers. communication was scarce on smiley town between the big two. the atmosphere that was before welcoming and enjoyable for big clans and solo players was now bitter, and enyone caught in the cross fire was in danger. secondary bases between the two were raided regularly, though there was no way to be sure who did it, it was usualy well assumed since 80% of the explosives belonged to 10% of the population. the iroquois wanted to make a base that could tower over their rivals, something to remind everyone on the server who has been the biggest for the longest. the admins agreed to remove any foundations that we needed to build so long as it was by the players choice. so after finding a location large and flat enough, i had walked through the houses and talked to players living there, offering them new housing inside the larger iroquois base or full compensation of the materials into their current base, or we demolish it with c4. Bandit Castle was created soon after

after the last server wipe in august of 14, the seerver population had diminished, everyone hated eachother, and the owner was fed up with all of the crap others gave him.
Smiley Town died.

you cannot play this version of Rust on steam anymore. and you cannot find people who will make you wish every week that you could go back to when times were simpler, and there was only one row of spiked fences.

i cut down a tree with a canibals head, duplicated thousands of logs from just a single tree, created a teleportaion system using log sleds and tree houses. #stilllessglitchesthanDayZ

its still a really nice game, very playable, and a blast with friends
