Another example of Lucas Pope picking one concept and absolutely nailing it.
It's a short-ish experience (I beat it in ~8 hours, but I'm pretty dumb, your mileage may vary), but there is no fat left to trim.
It's a great concept, executed with an engaging story that you uncover piece by piece, fantastic voice acting, and incredible frozen scenes.
The game rewards attention to detail and clever thinking, and it's probably good that it's not a 15+ hour experience, because once you start forgetting details it gets much more difficult.

I genuinely cannot recommend picking this up enough, solving these riddles is extremely rewarding.
Your experience will probably be drastically improved by busting out a piece of paper and frantically taking notes whenever you notice something that might end up being even vaguely relevant.

This review is absolutely subject to change, only have ~23 hours at the time of writing this.

There are some very annoying issues with multiplayer connections crashing, but it very rarely happens during missions, so it's not that bad. Connecting to a new session also doesn't take more than 5 seconds so it's rarely a big deal, unless you're playing a mission alone until the story cutscene, so that a friend can join, and while you're alone the session crashes and you're forced into offilne mode. Then you either have to disconnect mid-mission, or complete it on your own.

Apart from this, oh Lord, what a game. I've never played a MH game before, so it was a bit difficult to pick up at the beginning but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it ever rewarding. The combat has a huge amount of depth, you can expect to be bad at this for quite a while, but when you do pull off that perfect combo it's incredibly rewarding.

The monsters are unique and very well fleshed out and the fights are absolutely exhilerating, despite being so long. The open world works very well, and there's something amazing about tracking down a huge ravenous Iguana monster through the forest, only for a fire-breathing T-Rex to show up and straight up destroy both you and the iguana.

If you do pick it up, start with a simple weapon like the Katana, Dual Blades, or Sword and Board so you can manage the basics of combat before getting into more complicated movesets.

I can see this becoming my Game of the Year, but I need more time with this game to be certain. I can already see this having incredible longetivity and remaining fun for a very long time, hunting the same monster even 4 times in a row is still fun as hell. And if the console release is anything to go by, we can expect additional monsters to be released as the game goes on.

Amazing art style and a compelling story that makes it easy to ignore/not notice the normal telltale game flaws.

This is a hard one to review for me, I'm honestly not sure if I would recommend this or not. I'm gonna go towards yes for most people, it really depends on how well Chloe resonates with you as a character. Which, considering she's a pretty bad character in my opinion, might be rough.

Within the genre I'd say it's still better than anything telltale has made lately, but compared to the original Life is Strange, it just doesn't hold up at all. At least to me.

I'm a sucker for coming of age stories, and as such the original Life is Strange really, really got me. But this game doesn't really have any of that, even though it seems like it tries to. In the end all you do is futile, the Chloe you start with is also the Chloe that you will end the game as. She doesn't grow up, she doesn't change, she doesn't leave Arcadia Bay. She can't. Because she has to be there and she has to be Chloe so that the original Life is Strange can take place.

The character of Max, while maybe a tad bland to some, was something I could really empathize with, at least much more than Chloe. Chloe is a decent supporting character, but as a main character she falls completely flat. She is just a bad carricature of an angsty teen. I have not known a single person in my life that was actually comparible to her and the way she acts. Her character is just all over the place in this game, because they had to go more in depth.

This might be a bit personal, but I felt like there were so many things about Chloe that I should be able to empathize with. Skipping class, Losing a parent, being unsure of what to do with your life and just wanting to escape, feeling like you're obligated to make things easy for your surviving parent, but feeling like you're completely unable to do that.

Again, coming of age stories are very personal things. I feel like you have to have some things resonate with yourself or with your own life in order for them to be effective. These were what felt to me the strongest emotional features of Chloe, not the "punk rock roolz, authority droolz" ♥♥♥♥. That's a very played out trope.
And these themes felt like they weren't developed enough, if at all. Escape was one that had actual consequences and was explored a fair bit, but of course Chloe can't make any progress here. Because the original game has to happen.

The first game in my opinion had a much stronger overall theme, which I would sum up as "things could be different". Something that probably resonates with many, many more people. Whether things could be better, worse, or just plain different, I think everyone thinks about how things could be every now and then. That statement is explored so incredibly deeply and effectively in the first game.

The game is also much shorter than the original Life is Strange, which is a shame because it feels like it could really, really benefit from some extra development, especially of the themes I mentioned.
It also feels like you're just watching for most of it, maybe I'm misremembering, but I felt like I had more choice and more things to do in the first game.

But enough of that, onto something that this game does brilliantly in my opinion, just like the first one did. Apart from the Big Bad Evil Guy, every character in the game that's an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ (and there's a bunch of those) has pretty strong reasons to be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You'll hate their guts the first time you meet them, but the more you find out about them, the harder it will be for you to stay mad. Everyone has something ♥♥♥♥♥♥ going on in their lives and it's presented in a very believable way.

I could say much more, but I'm afraid most of my points need some spoilers to really illustrate them.

Overall I'd say it's probably worth buying. It doesn't even begin to hold a candle to the first one in my opinion, but I don't personally feel like it has somehow harmed my enjoyment or memory of the first game either.

If you were already unsure about the first one, this is probably not worth getting. It keeps the flaws of the original, but doesn't have all of the strengths. Or at least doesn't execute them as well.

It's a bit hard to review a game that should really only be played blind.

If you're sceptical because you're not into weeb ♥♥♥♥, take a a look at the games I own on my profile. I'm still recommending it.
It's free and short. In my opinion it's quite the experience.

Just stick with it. Don't read anything else about it and just stick with it. All the way. Trust me.

I've always been one who liked telltale games, and who was never bothered by knowing that choice was just an illusion. Either way, if the story being told is good, then I play it to experience that story.
But this game doesn't even try. The choices are way too obviously ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and the story is just so incredibly dumb.

5 Bucks in a steam sale, maybe. If you care about how Clem's story continues.
But be warned, it's dumb. It's average in the scope of video game stories, and those are usually complete garbage. If there's other gameplay apart from the story, then that's not as bad, but here the story better actually be good.

Disclaimer: I got this game before the steam release on the Oculus Store and used ReVive to play it with my Vive, so the hours played here are way lower than the amount of time I actually played this.

Hands down the single best VR game out there yet, apart from maybe Elite: Dangerous if you've got the setup.

Like all VR games it's lacking in content, short (though very, VERY replayable, especially with endless and challenge modes), and graphically simple, but it uses everything Roomscale VR has to offer and it does so brilliantly. You don't need to flail around like an idiot so it won't get sweaty as quickly as something like GORN.

The Concept and execution are both absolutely fantastic. It worked well in the 2D version, and translates even better into VR.

This game as a whole just feels right. If I could pick only one game as proof that VR has something new and actually productive to offer to gaming, this game would be it.

This is my one and only VR must buy, which is why I bought it twice.

IMPORTANT: If you get it, make sure to go to right click the game in the left bar in your library and go into properties -> betas -> opt into original-vive-control-scheme. The default controls work okay but I think the original controls are far superior.
You have to hold the grip buttons to hold onto a weapon, which would be annoying if you held a weapon for long, but that doesn't happen, you use a weapon and then toss it. It feels more immersive, more responsive, and makes throwing much easier.

I'd rather punch myself in the testicles for 12 hours than play this game for 1.
