It is plainly obvious that I am a Sonic fan, but I don't let that cloud my judgment of what makes a good video game. Sonic games have been very hit or miss - either the physics work just right and you get really fun mechanics and speed, or the controls and physics are ♥♥♥♥ and the gimmicks suck.

Sonic Generations, I am glad to say, is one of the best Sonic games I have ever played. This is not a "hold right to win!" game, but it won't send you into death pits for doing so. This is a great game of both 2D and 3D exploration, with so many reminiscent gimmicks that celebrate what made the older games fun. If you have any appreciation for music from other Sonic games, you'll find this soundtrack to be top-notch and filled with incredible remixes. The challenges are good and not overwhelming, and always give you unique objectives that change up level layouts in nice ways unique to the challenge.

If you enjoy Sonic games or excellent platforming, this game nails it.

Batman: Arkham City is more Arkham Asylum stuffed into an open world environment, mostly comprised of rooftops and Riddler trophies. There is so much content in this game that it is overwhelming, but will also keep you busy for a long time. Highly enjoyed it, especially the challenges integrated into the game, as well as the individual challenge maps.

Trine is the kind of puzzle platforming game that heavily relies on a physics engine to solve, though flexible enough to allow the player to force other solutions. It not only looks pretty, but is genuinely fun to navigate.

This game is quite a bit more fun multiplayer (due to trolling your friend with physics), but it still holds up super well in singleplayer.

Vampire: The Masquerade is a decently well-known role-playing system that I was not familiar with before playing Bloodlines. However, for a new player like myself to jump in without any prior context, Bloodlines does a great job of establishing the fiction of the world of Vampire.

What is most impressive is the game's way of forcing a "vampire mentality" on you. The Masquerade is a system requiring vampires to keep their existence secret from humanity, and this sometimes means having to kill innocents in unfortunate circumstances. By not doing so, you risk the lives and foundation of all vampire society.

Bloodlines is an open-world modern RPG/adventure, allowing you to take quests while following a main story narrative. For a game released in 2004, the graphics aren't half-bad, and the character expressions/facial animations are actually rather impressive. Be aware that some odd unofficial patching needs to be done to make this game work on modern systems.

Mr. Robot is a very tame RPG that doesn't try to do anything fancy. In fact, it is an incredibly slow grind with very little sense of progression. The balance is poor as well - on hard difficulty, there is very little you can do to prevent death when you start the game, and by the end, you are so overpowered that the final boss battle is pathetic.

The story, too, is very slow and uninteresting - a rogue AI has taken over a space ship, and you must take it back over using the help of robots that seem to have very little vested interest. None of the characters are appealing, or have any kind of recognizable peronality.

Overall, avoid Mr. Robot unless you can somehow win a bet involving boring RPGs.

VVVVVV is a 2-D gravity platformer that gets its name from the shape of the game's one-hit kill spike traps. Regardless of your skill level, VVVVVV is an awesomely challenging game that requires more strategy than reflex.

VVVVVV revolves around changing gravity between the ground and ceiling. Your player does not "jump"; you force him to move from floor to ceiling and back to floor to avoid or traverse over obstacles. However, switching gravity is only possible while not in mid-air. As straight-forward as it sounds, the player is forced to bounce around on moving platforms, tight landings, and to avoid enemies. For additional challenge, optional collectable trinkets are scattered around to collect. One in particular is a very famously challenge - just Google "Veni Vidi Vici VVVVVV".

Super fun. Not a lot of replayability, but the exploration elements are nice and keep you looking around for things to get before the game ends.

Windosill is a Flash "figure out how to get out of the room" game. Seriously, it is actual Flash. I wasn't even aware that you could sell such things on Steam. While it is okay, it falls into the category of being a short Flash puzzle game that I could've played an equivalent of on Kongregate or Newgrounds.

In fact, it looks like the game is here: http://windosill.com/
If that's not the full game, don't worry about it. For $0, there are a lot longer, better, and cheaper (as in free) games of this very nature all over the place.

Puzzle Bots is a "my first point-n-click adventure" game for children. The plot follows tiny robots that get into cartoonish misadventures when their much larger human owners aren't looking. The puzzles are simple and definitely geared towards children, and the love-triangle story of the robot's humans made me want to run a drill through my head.

I wouldn't recommend this for anyone over 13 years old. Under that, however, it might be a decent game for $5.

While Puzzle Agent 1 had quite a few simple puzzles, Puzzle Agent 2 is significantly simpler in its puzzle design and provides almost no challenge whatsoever. It is almost like a rehash of a lot of the easy puzzles from the first game.

In fact, this is my biggest gripe with the game: a lot of the puzzles feel like simple variations of the puzzles in Puzzle Agent 1. While this is not true for all the puzzles, I can't help but feel this is a lazy follow-up game.

A lot of the same characters and locations are re-used, and even the story becomes rushed and unfinished at the end. It *does* conclude - unlike Puzzle Agent 1 - however so much is either glossed over or ignored that it's just not the satisfying ending that you'd want.

Get Puzzle Agent 2 *only* if you have a burning desire to finish the story started in Puzzle Agent 1. Otherwise, I would recommend skipping it unless you can get both games together for cheap.

Jolly Rover is that kind of game that starts off slowly, gets a lot better the further you progress into it, but never becomes truly great. However, it still holds itself well in the adventure gaming market, with lots of impressive visual detail in its backgrounds and character animations.

Item interactions and puzzles are very often straight-forward and obvious, though a few are actually truly clever. There is voodoo magic that you learn throughout the game by mixing various symbols together, and is used pretty well as a puzzle mechanic without ever becoming overly complex.

I enjoyed this mostly for the story and animation. While the puzzles weren't great, they never felt out-of-place or too simple, and I feel the experience as a whole made for a very solid adventure game.
