I am an avid "Open World Survival Craft" Connoisseur and Icarus has pretty much surpassed all of them (excluding minecraft I think).

First off this game does have issues. There's glitches where you can get stuck on a tree, texture glitches with weather, frame drops, and the biggest issue imo is my arrows don't go where I shoot them (Only happens when playing on a dedicated server or in a friends server). But I believe this game has tons of other amazing qualities that allows me to look past these bugs.

Second, I want to talk about the gameplay. Session based missions where you lose everything you craft, built, and gathered once you're done with the mission. This feature was something I was very against at first, but as I got better at this genre of game, it became one of my favorite parts. I refer to this game as "Forest speedrunning". The Forest was one of my favorite games, but I got so good at it, that it became boring. I knew the best places to build, the location of all the caves, what items they had, and how to beat it quickly. The base building in the Forest was fun and I milked some entertainment out of it, but it soon got old. Icarus was fun because it seemed to be made for someone like me that could no longer enjoy a lot of the games in this open world survival craft genre anymore. Instead of grinding for gear, loot, bases, and materials once, you get to do it a bunch of times. And it is a grind. I remember it used to take me about 4 hours to gather the materials, build a base, and make an anvil in the game (early game crafting item). Now I'm making fabricators (late game item) in under 2 hours. The improvement in my efficiency and speed at getting my mission necessary stations and items up and going was fun to experience. The early game is tough, as is any open world survival craft game, but once you get the essentials down, you can start progressing fast. Every new tier of the tech tree had me pretty much relearning the basics all over again. It's such a deep game that reaching the final items of the tech tree isn't the real challenge, its all about getting good at getting to that point and the missions do a good job of walking you through that. I want to bring up a few gripes I have with other open world survival craft games. I do love all these games, I just think its important to bring up these issues to show how Icarus corrects them.

The Forest 2 and Green Hell - These games pretty much told you exactly where to go, which isn't an issue normally, but I had no incentive to build a base. It was literally just going from one part of the map to the next until I reached the end. Crafting Stations, difficulty, and hiding objective locations can incentivize me to build a base. Icarus often tells you where you need to go, but the difficulty and the need for sheltered crafting stations and storage makes building atleast a small base essential on about 90% of the missions.

The Forest and RAFT - Limited replayability. The best items are found in game except for maybe the gun and a few craftables that require a blueprint. Once I know where to look, I can get it instantly. You can replay the game a few times and it'll still be fun, but once you hit 5-6 it gets old. Icarus's complex tech tree, leveling, and game knowledge makes it take so long to master the game and its still fun to get better at the process, not to mention they've released an update EVERY SINGLE WEEK for almost 2 years. There's constantly new content and the devs seem to listen to public opinion on ideas and changes.

Terraria - 2D lol

Minecraft - The Graphics are a part of the charm, but sometimes I need a break from blocks

This Game has become one of my favorite all time games. If you make it through the steep learning curve at the beginnning, you will love this game. If you don't like the session based missions, don't worry, one of the next big updates is combining open world mode and the mission modes so (i assume) you won't lose your base and stuff each mission. The normal, session based missions will still be available I believe. I enjoy getting better at starting from scratch but I am excited to see how different it is going into some of these missions with gear and a base already made.

I feel like this game doesn't get the love it deserves. It had a rocky start no doubt, but the devs have listened to the community and have been working hard to make a game of high quality. Just know that this is a next gen game, so up to date hardware is going to create a barrier for most players.

There's a youtube series on the Icarus youtube channel with live action cutscenes made for the plot of the game. In it, there's a quote "You can't fear icarus, you need to respect it". This what a lot of players like myself went through at the beginning. I spent forever grinding the first few missions because I was not confident in my ability to proceed to the more difficult missions in the Arctic and Desert Biome. Eventually I did move on to those more difficult missions and thats where I got sucked in. Icarus is no joke, especially playing alone. I reccomend using Icarusintel.com for mission briefing and planning before a harder mission. One of my favorite parts is planning our mission with friends. I hope you guys enjoy as much as I do!
