Dredmor is great. It's a visually-understandable Roguelike with the edges sanded off. It laughs at itself. It's got a bewildering array of skills and items.
It's funny and fun.

Dark Souls is a game that doesn't hold your hand, and doesn't want you to want it to. It's a game you learn from experience(read trial and error), or you learn from the community.

Myself? I mainly got it from the community. A couple of buddies and some wiki-ing made this game that was once an intimidating cliff into an invigorating hike through the hills. It's not a way to ruin the game, to get others to help you (be it through "how do I beat this boss?" or reading a wiki about how to find a certain crafting item); it's simply a different way to play it and enjoy it.

This game has the most satisfying combat, one of the most compelling subtle worlds, some seriously cool loot, and an unconventional and interesting multiplayer system.

It has it's negatives, certainly; the PC port was not good (DSFix is practically mandatory), Games for Windows Live is not a selling point, the camera can be temperamental, and when you're not progressing it can feel a bit hopeless. BUT; all these things are really a testament to how good the game is because despite all these flaws the game shines through - it's truly grossly incandescant.

Bring on Dark Souls 2!
