Early Access Review
I never recommend games on steam through steam reviews, i always recommend/not recommend games by word of mouth. Not this game. This game is by far one of the best rogue-like/lite games out there, it presses all those buttons for me. There's a multitude of playstyles to choose from, sometimes even per character. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of playstyles that are just plain inferior to others (going anything but giant 1 punch loader? granted there's not much variance in her skills as of the time of writing). However, this is one of those games where a run doesnt flat out end because you didnt get every good item early enough. Whereas in other games (off the top of my head, getting proper blessings in UnderMine) a run pretty much prematurely ends because you dont get good items, risk of rain allows for your own personal skill and safe play to get you through the tough parts of a run and onto the next level in search of more/better items.

All of this to say risk of rain is great at doing one thing in particular (for me) very well: fulfilling the power fantasy of having "the god run."

What i mean by that is, once you get good enough at the game, you can play in such a way that you can make-do with almost any items given to you in your first few levels, enough to get to that point in the game where you have more money than you know what to do with. You just start amassing items and obliterating everything in sight.

Does this mean the game is easy? not really. There's three difficulties to choose from: Drizzle (easy), Rainstorm (normal), and Monsoon ( HARD ). Drizzle sees an increase to player health regen and a reduction in time scaling (the game gets gradually harder and more enemies/more expensive items the later a given run goes). Rainstorm is no changes to anything; "the way it's meant to be played" - devs probably. Monsoon sees a reduction in player health regen and a large increase in difficulty scaling, meaning the game gets much harder, much sooner. Monsoon is the way the game is meant to be played. Getting a good feeling run in monsoon is not easy, but it's oh-so rewarding when you get one.

Regardless of difficulty, the devs have a smart of way of setting checks against you to tell you "hey, youre in this run too long, you gotta end it soon buddy" or "get out or die." It begins with more elite monsters, monsters that have elemental affixes to them to make them deadlier/tankier. Then you hear the dreaded noise. Even if you've never heard it before ever, if you hear it, you'll know it's not good. Then you get elite bosses, bosses with one of those elemental affixes. Then you get (as of the time of writing) THE elite boss , a very deadly boy, albeit rare. Then, you hear more of that dreaded noise, God you hear it everywhere .

Then you look in the mirror, and you blast yourself out of fear of what you've become

... And then a wisp shoots your toe and you lose a 300 minute run.

i ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate this game

is gud. its in early access, and for being in here, it's got quite a decent amount of polish to it and a lot of content to explore. theres some deck/class balance thats otta wack (as of this review), but its nothing too horrible.

buy at your earliest convenience, even in early access

Definitely one of the best fighting games to ever be released. Fun to pick up and play with friends. Relatively easy and to a certain degree "free form" combo system. Of course, there are optimized combos and such, but if youre just playing with friends and you dont really wanna learn super optimized combos you can still feel somewhat rewarded with the combo system. For those already into fighting games, Tekken offers a level of depth in conjunction with its mvement system and "crush" system (low/high crushes) that allow for multiple ways to play around your opponent and their playstyle.

A diverse amount of characters to fit your ideal playstyle(s). Each character can be played more than one way as well. If you like to play poke-oriented characters then there are a lot to choose from, even from those not traditonally seen as such and you wouldn't be hampered by that choice. The same character can be played *very* defensively or *extremely* offensively, and perform perfectly fine with both playstyles.

Buy this game. Theres a lot more here than what i listed. Its a good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game.
