I already know it's my 2025 GOTY, at least a strong contender.
It is well worth the money and scratch a itch you don't get often in fps games.

Nice game if you are itching for a portable Resident evil with WWI and are not expecting anything else.
It comes with a few negative points which are:

-heavy backtracking during the later half of the game. not just any backtracking but VERY LONG WAY backtracking with very rare opportunities to unlock a door for shorter trips and they usually don't make sense because these shortcuts leads to room you know will leads to nowhere interesting. The first half had backtracking, but it was more fun to explore and more understandable to explore around.
-jank aiming. your best odds of hitting is aiming in this order, up and down, left and right, then diagonally anywhere. Overall just try to not shoot diagonally unless you use a shotgun, it also influence trying to lit up fuels on the floor to burn bodies as i struggled to lit them up by wasting bullets at my first attempts, i favoured shooting fuel by aiming either up and down when i had the chance.
-enemies line of sight is similar to a horse with blinder as they only see what's in front of them, they are also very deaf and easy to sneak up to.
-the game has stairs and mud puddles that slows you down, but somehow enemies pursuing you are not slowed down by such things, i can't tell if it's an oversight or a way to say rats and enemy soldiers are just that better at stair climbing and in mud puddles than you.

Then these are my personal peeves:

-supplies in large quantities in normal mode, you might favour going through hard more right away
-dark souls dodging mechanic, if you played old resident evil, it's another mechanic that make it even easier to avoid soldiers in tight corridor, the horror of world war one dissapear right away as you are already a master of evasion with I frame.
(enemy kicks ignore I frames)

Overall it's definitively a game to play for its original ideas despite being weighted down by it's own gameplay decisions, which you can overcome and master in no time if you give it a chance.

Game finished within 5 hours of game without spending too much time with sandbox in the hub much.
very underwhelming experience compared to Bonework sprinkled with more bugs somehow (more clipping, thrown off ledges doing parkour, index controllers not grabbing objects anymore).
the avatar change gimmick only showed up at the third hour of my playthrough and was barely used after their initial tutorial levels so don't expect much from that system.
It's twice more expensive than bonework with twice less content if you compare the story mode length.
At least you can drop magazines with a single menu button preess now.

Wait for a sale when bugs get fixed and once people do mods.

14 minute of a passive agressive narrator that seems to wish you were in the trenches to die there. i don't know who is Dan Carlin but i personally don't find his narration particularly good to talk about the horrors of the great war.
Visuals and arts are pretty nice and makes me wish there was a WWI VR game for the immersion, it really looked like it could be more but it's basically way too short
You get 6-7 scenery to stand idle while looking at stuff around you, so each scene is roughly 1-2 minute long.

I'm all in for VR documentaries in 3D format but 14 minute it's just nothing.

I was lightly curious about the game and gave it a go with the demo and today's release, i wasn't sure what to expect.
I'm giving a negative review because this game is clearly not for everyone but i don't mean it so badly.
If you are the type that tends to avoid any type of news/social media, this game ain't for you, including me.

Directly starting with what i disliked.
My reason is that after playing the game almost 2 hours, i felt like the writing is all about common problems of our real world.
within those two hours i've read about racial issues, immigration problems, parent/child talk, viral virus spread, meeting app, strikes/riots and world pollution (and probably more i missed) just like our own media.
i get this kind of talk maybe every couple of days or weeks with people i meet and it's tiring me to hear about our world going upside down, i just don't want the same old routine with elves, orcs, mermaid, or any race this game has to offer.
Basically the whole fantasy setting set on Earth 2020 located in alternate Seattle just feels like a façade to talk about real life topics, it does not offer any new insight about a "what if" situation between humans and other fantasy races.
The game could have been made with only humans and the difference in dialogue wouldn't be so big.

As for the positive, i like the pixel art, and the soundtrack.

I can't give a rating out of /10, as i'm thinking maybe i'm just out of touch with life or something, but reading about first world problems is not my cup of tea and yet i get the same cup everyday.

[Review update]: the first patch rebalanced the overall difficulty and made the game more enjoyable so far, managing to go through way more than the initial release and finally able to discover the game more than before.
The game stay challenging but not impossible anymore.
There is also a roadmap post telling every future updates for the next weeks which is very convincing of the game's future. So more balance/fix and contents is assured.

It is now worth keeping a watch from close.
With a few more polishing around, i think the game could earn positive recommendations, as my opinion not changed from negative to positive right now.

[original release review]:
To make a short list of pros, the game have a nice visual artstyle, the gameplay is easy to understand, the ost put the mood.
now for the cons.

The game is atrociously harder than the beginning of Darkest dungeon.
It would be more enjoyable if you could change difficulty and auto-save. (but will probably never happens just like DD)
The game is clearly made to be unfair since most patrol are up to 5 soldiers vs your 4 (so far encountered a lot of patrol made of 5)
got 3 unique characters killed by explosive crits that reach over 40 damage within 3 missions. (+2 generic soldiers, and they cost a lot for what they are)
I don't think i even got that many death in such a short span of time in Darkest Dungeon.
it seems like the more you focus an enemy, the more it dodge easy, it's only an impression but missing soldiers 3-4 time in a row with accuracy above 70% ain't the most pleasing experience.
It's a big RNG experience.

Basically yes, it's Darkest dungeon formula in WWII but it feels awfully more unforgiving.
It's a case of "either you are lucky, or you are not".
for now if you were hoping the game to be an enjoyable DD experience without the anger, it's not the case.

If you are a masochist, buy the game.
If you don't want to grow white hairs, skip.

I will try to play this game more but it's honestly a tough start and it really doesn't award you for smart thinking.

I legit like the weird yet catchy ost of every WotH games but it pains me to say this remix album sounds way too experimental/avant guard.
If you're slightly confused about what you're hearing in the album preview, it's no good for you, they pretty much added the most audible and least remixed part of each tracks in the preview.
