Can’t possibly recommend it in the current state. Bots and cheaters have gone rampant, making the game barely playable at all. The community have been begging Valve to do something for 5 years now, and nothing was done. As long as there is nothing fixed, stay away from this game. It ain’t worth downloading

EDIT (30/06/2024) : Well, who would have thought ? Valve did something, and actually banned bots and bot hosters ! After 5 years, yeah, but better late than never, I guess. Bots are being banned en masse by Valve, and the game is playable and fun again ! Played a 2 hours
(great) game yesterday with a friend without having to open the kick menu ONCE, can you believe it ? A week ago, you had to constantly go back and forth with the vote kick system, every 2 minutes to get rid of the bots, and now they're just gone !

Although I fully expect those bot hosters to find a way around it and come back, somehow, much like cheaters.(Never underestimate the amount of free time of an autistic unemployed basement goblin) They'll be back, eventually, and I'm somewhat still mad at Valve, for taking so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long, for forcing the whole community to rise up, to get 340.000 signatures on a petition, trigger a collective boycott on TF2 items, get #fixTF2 trending on Twitter, to review bomb the game and still not communicate at all... We had to fight tooth and nails for this

The bots will come back, but for now... Let's just enjoy the game without them while we have it. The game is finally fun and enjoyable again, and in that state, I definitely can recommend you playing it
