I picked this up pretty much solely on some very vague, nostalgic memories of playing the JSRF demo on xbox over 20 years ago. I'm pretty torn on this game, but I ultimately decided to give it a very marginal thumbs down for subjective reasons.

I love the style of this game, I really do. It's very late 90s/early 00s 'urban' through and through but with a futuristic twist, the music completely works and the playful attitude and tone does a lot to keep the simple premise of the story fun and engaging. It's also very appealing to look at with its colourful art style and tasteful PS2 era low-poly modeling. Animations are good, too.

What I don't like, unfortunately, is the way it plays. I was really surprised by this as I was expecting it to be up my alley, but I found the combo / point scoring system to feel quite unsatisfying and strangely un-intuitive, the physics feel extremely floaty in a way I didn't care for, and I think the whole graffiti mechanic is really dull and quite tedious.

Obviously, a ton of people feel differently, but this game just made me want to play a THPS game instead, and when I did, I found it immensely more fun. I don't think this is a bad game, at all. But it wasn't for me.

One of the first casualties of the open-world-ification wave that took place during the XBONE/PS4 era. Going from the level design of the original, it just doesn't enhance the game in any positive way imho. Traversing the world back and forth between missions gets old really, really fast and the optional side missions are the worst kind of filler.

The story telling is also really hamfisted in super obvious ways where Faith is frustratingly slow on the uptake. It's annoying and simply not compelling or interesting, though I can admit there are some cool set-pieces.

Visually, and atmospherically, the game is great and has aged really well, it's by far the best thing about it. The actual moment to moment 'running' also benefits from some mechanical evolution to make things a bit more slick and fun, though most of this is unfortunately locked behind a skill tree or story progression.

Don't get me wrong, the original was a flawed game too, but at least it didn't overstay its welcome. Between the repetitive open world structure, poor story telling and utter garbage combat that the game occassionally forces you into, I honestly think this sequel is a worse experience than the original. Just skip it.

It's just a very, very standard open world game. Nothing inherently wrong with that, but the problem is that this is a very over-saturated genre at this point, so outside of the Harry Potter setting, I don't think it really does enough to set itself apart.

My bigger issue, however, is the performance. While wandering around the castle I experienced some absolutely brutal frame pacing issues and huge frame drops. For instance, in certain parts of the castle my framerate would be humming along just fine at 100+fps, and then drop down to the 30s for seconds at a time before recovering. While my system isn't top of the line, it's certainly not slow, either;

5800X3D
2x16GB 3600 CL16
RX 6800
SN850X 2TB

The other thing that really struck me during my brief time with it was how stiff some the voice acting was. I don't expect dialogue in a game to sound exactly like an IRL conversation, but it came across as very un-organic, and really broke my immersion.

After a couple of hours, I just really couldn't see myself actually spending my time with this one, so I chose to refund. Don't get me wrong, nothing about Hogwarts Legacy screamed 'BAD GAME!' to me, but it is up against a sea of competition and what I saw of it made me feel that it doesn't sit even close the top of the pile.

I'd only recommend this if you're a die-hard Harry Potter fan, otherwise it's a skip.

I think this is the most well-rounded racing simulator and where I would recommend starting if you're new.

Since the recent big update the driving and force feedback feel great, but the AI are also great to race against. The weather and day night cycles are good, the out-of-the-box HUD is good, nice sound and graphics, while also running well. Controller support is also great and I found it be pretty driveable with a bit of tuning, so you don't necessarily need a wheel to jump in.

What is really needs now is a structured multiplayer system with a safety ranking like iRacing or RFactor 2. That would be the cherry on the icing.

In any case, get your hands on this and get Crew Chief installed and you're in for some really enjoyable racing with the least amount of fuss.

I don't think this is a bad game at all, but I think there are very legitimate reasons that you might not like it; so I really can't recommend it as a 'must play' title. There is an inherent repetition to the mechanical loop here that I won't spoil, but I found that it wore out its welcome and became very tiresome. I like the way that the game doesn't play its hand right at the start, and I appreciate that it doesn't treat you like an idiot the way so many modern games do, but I think that it perhaps goes a bit too far in the other direction and obfuscates the path to progress just a bit too much.

I saw a positive review that described the game as like reading a book out of order, one random page at a time. The more pages you turn, you will progressively put it together and make sense of it. I think this is a good description, and there is certainly a satisfaction in unravelling a mystery in that way, but I'd rather just read the book in the correct order in the first place. It would be a lot less painful and you end up at the same destination.

If you think you'd like an extended brainteaser to untangle, I think this might be for you. If you get frustrated at sinking a session into a game and seemingly getting absolutely nowhere, you might want to give this one a miss.

Definitely a great game, there's lots to like here. They nailed the weapon feel and fluid movement. Level and enemy design is good for the most part, the music is great as is the sense of atmosphere. The story is minimalist, but intriguing. You can do flips for absolutely no gain or benefit other than to have fun (which is the best kind of mechanic). There's also plenty of options to make the game look and feel how you want it to. Ultrawide is fully supported and it runs like butter (as you would expect for a game like this).

The visual direction is obviously reminiscent of games like Quake and Half Life. I'm not a massive fan of the look of that early 3D era, so I think the revival boomer shooters that went for the pixel art sprite look are much more visually appealing than Dusk. I also don't care for the rats or climbing sections which I feel are annoying and don't add anything of substance.

Relatively minor complaints aside, this is an easy recommendation. Go for it!

This is pretty good! Compared to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (the most popular game in the genre), it has some things going for it, namely the transforming vehicles, varied cast of characters from other Sega games and courses that change quite substantially lap to lap. While a minor touch, I also quite like that you can change direction in a drift to continue building it between multiple corners. The controls, visuals and music are good, too.

I do think MK8D is the more well rounded game for a few reasons, though. Firstly it has a much higher track count, and that's before you even consider the mirrored versions or the DLC. I also think the visual style between the tracks is more harmonious, like they could all be in the same universe. In this game, it's much more clear that you're 'Universe Hopping' which is a bit jarring imo. The customisation is also more free-form in MK8D, particularly since there's karts and bikes, and doesn't require you to play the same character over and over again to earn mods for them.

The port is mediocre even for a decade ago, but it is functional enough. My series X controller works fine in game without any tinkering. Graphical options are basic and can't be changed in-game, framerate is capped at 60 and ultrawide resolutions are not supported. I did notice some temporary framerate issues when activating the 'All Star' weapon, and the game slows right down during the podium ceremony on my system, but otherwise it runs fine.

All things said, this is a fun Mario Kart-like, especially at sale prices which are very cheap. Give it a try!
