Sims 3 is a great game, that plays the role of a successful successor to the first two games in the series. The open world is always really fun, there is also so much for you to do as your Sims! I have always loved this series, and will continue to play for hours on end. Main downside with this one is that due to the open world, there tends to be a lot of bugs and confusion by the pathing of the Sims. These are fixable pretty much every time. If you're looking to buy the Sims 3, just make sure you buy it and the dlc while on sale- they tend to go down to $5, which is much more worth it.
