I was really conflicted with whether or not I should recommend or not recommend this compilation of oldschool sonic games, because while it does have some of my favorite games of all time, the presentation isn't perfect and as it stands right now, the game does have some glaring issues that make me a bit uncertain.

So far I really have been enjoying the games at a higher aspect ratio and a variety of other enhancements due to the fact that these games are not strict ports, but rather remastered games running on a newer engine, and having them all in one compilation feels pretty good (although the price point is a point of contention for many people, understandably so)

I do have some grievances though which have definitely taken away some enjoyment for me personally. For starters, the tails AI in Sonic 2 is somehow worse in this version than it was in the original genesis game, which ends up with tails getting stuck off-screen and constantly jumping and dying (which gets super annoying after a certain point), and although I have not started playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles yet, I have heard others say that this issue is prevalent in that game too.

Secondly, the lack of an option for choosing the soundtrack in Sonic CD is pretty disappointing too, as I personally feel as though the Japanese soundtrack for that game is better than the western version, but that is just my personal preference. The game really should have had the option to choose here.

A little more disappointing issue with music too, although a tad bit more justifiable, is the replacement of certain songs in Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Specifically Carnival Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone (RIP) and Launch Base zone) with updated prototype versions rather than the tracks that were created in a collaboration with Michael Jackson (which I am assuming is due to issues with the Jackson Estate)

I do anticipate that there will soon be mods to fix some of these issues (or there might already be some now, I'm not sure as of writing this), but as it stands right now, I would say that I would only really recommend this if you have never had the opportunity to play these games, or if you pick it up on sale.

Slight update: I have found that there is in fact a way to change the soundtrack for Sonic CD, by going into the options from the game itself, and not through story mode or the hub options.

By far my most favorite indie game of all time. This game has had some serious love poured into it over the last few years and Relogic is one of my favorite developers of all time. They have provided so many hours of content on top of the base game for free, and the price they ask for it is a steal.

Do yourself a favor and play this game.
