This game has a long way to go, very poorly optimized (even on high end machine), however there is one aspect of the game that is accomplished very well... it makes you want to play Battlefield 1.

Note: This game is NOT UMvC3 so stop treating/comparing it as if it were. If MvCI was supposed to be like UMvC3, it would have simply been called MvC4, not Infinite. I strongly urge those who negatively reviewed because of an aspect mention here, to strongly reconsider their stance on the game. Simply put, you are hindering yourself from enjoying a great game that has a lot to offer. The autocombo, auto-jump, and easy hyper combo systems offer a great introduction for newcomers. Most of the combos/setups have a similar pattern that is relatibely easy to pick up, and the Infinity Stone system offers an endless possibility of different setups, mixups, and general tactics to make this game quite replayable.

TLDR
Great and easy-to-pickup fighting game that has unfortunately gotten a bad reputation because of the salt in the fighting game community && because the FGC is nearly impossible to satisfy.

Intro

Let me first start off by saying I'm a huge member of the FGC, and the MvC series is true to my heart. UMvC3 was hands down my favorite fighting game ever. I purchased UMvC3 at least four times (X360, X1, PC, Vita). However MvCI is now my favorite fighting game for a variety of reason. While I still play UMvC3 (as well as MvC2) from time-to-time, I think MvCI has a lot more to offer, especially to the newcomers in the MvC series.

FGC qualms, why they're wrong, and why you should give this game a try
  • Crapcom doesn't listen
  • Small Character Roster
  • No X-men
  • DLC announced prior to release/ models seem to be complete
  • Graphics
  • 2v2 instead of 3v3
  • Denuvo
  • FGC General Salt

Crapcom doesn't listen

Many people argue Capcom otherwise known as Crapcom does not listen to the FGC, this is far from true. They clearly learned their mistakes from Street Fighter V (SFV). The FGC complained that there was no story mode, so they added story mode at launch to MvCI. Granted, this story mode is not that great, the dialogue is just one cliche followed by another, it's still offered in the game for those interested in the lore. MvCI story mode is a major improvement over SFV story mode, which was just a bunch of cutscenes glued together with very short and easy fights.

Many people complained that they had to rely on third party software to get their fightsticks to work in SFV, so Capcom offered DirectInput support by default. Note: I encountered a bug where both my pad and fightstick were mapped to player 1, if this is the case, you have to put x360ce into "/common/Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite/MVCI/Binaries/Win64/"

Small Character Roster

Many people complained about the small character roster this game has compared to UMvC3. However you have to consider the fact that this game is not UMvC3, in fact, the original MvC3 character roster consisted of 36 characters, which is quite close to MvCI 30 characters. While this game does have a considerable small roster compared to UMvC3, it does have a larger roster then other fighting games out there such as: SFV, Guilty Gear, Injustice 2 (base game) and Skull Girls.

If you consider it, 30 characters still offers quite a variety of different combinations of possible teams (435).

No X-men
This had little to do with Capcom and had to do with a confusing licensing issue. Consider the fact that Capcom lost the Marvel license a few years ago, there was virtually no hope for a sequel, however they were able to luckily obtain the license again. So granted within time we will possibly see the return of x-men characters.

DLC announced prior to release
Unfortunately, in order to make the release date, Capcom was forced to hold off development of characters, namely the Monster Hunter character. If they decided to release this character, along with the others in development, it would have set back the release date at least a couple of months since they have to go through extensive testing to ensure the characters are not inherently broken (no infinite loops).

Those who argue this game will become p2w, have to consider the fact that DLC is optional, the season pass is optional, you can still enjoy the base game. You could purchase the characters as they are released, and that way, at no point in time do you have to drop $30 for a character pass, of course the amount you spend on this game adds up, but what you are really paying for is, for the longevity of this game. DLC offers new meta, which is vital in fighting games. If no new content is produced, then the game becomes stale.

Graphics
While the graphics are not as polished as Tekken, I would argue that graphics in fighting games do not necessary matter so much. Also consider the fact that the higher resolution graphics would require more powerful machines, so the graphics seems to be a compromise.

2v2 instead of 3v3

I want to emphasis that this game is NOT UMvC3. The 2v2 system is actually quite fluid. One of the main issues I found if they opted to go for 3v3 is the amount of button real-estate. 3v3 switching would only work if you do not map lp+hp and lk+hk buttons, however if you are like me, and you decided to map those buttons for easy access to specials, then you would not be able to switch to your third character. This is because most fightsticks only have 8 buttons, therefore forcing you to decide what buttons would you rather have (arguably you could sacrafice lp+hp and lk+hk and it would work, but this makes certain things like wave dashing a bit more difficult imo). The other alternative is to have KOF style 3v3, where you cannot tag, but must eliminate your opponents enemies in sequential order, this simply does not work.

Another issue with 3v3 is the Soul Stone would be overpowered at this point, meaning it would revive 2 fallen heroes possibly, instead of just 1, or you would be forced to decide which hero to revive which also still be a quirky button combination.

Denuvo

Unfortunately the community is mislead by what Denuvo actually does. No it is not a rootkit, yes it is somewhat intrusive because of the way it works, yes it is effective. Normally Denuvo is removed once the game gets cracked. All this simply does is forces people to buy the game and support the developers. Denuvo is not a permanent solution, it will eventually get cracked, it is just a waiting game at this point. The argument that Denuvo destroys system performance is a case-by-case issue, and has a lot to do with the read and writes it makes to the hard drive, so in a sense, Denuvo may impact your system if you have a slower hard drive. This could easily be solved by purchasing an SSD.

FGC Salt

The fundamental problem with the fighting game community resides in the fact that we are nearly impossible to satisfy. Look at Marvel vs Capcom 3 release... everyone was upset and constantly compared it to MvC2. Shortly after MvC3 was released, they released UMvC3, and once again, the community was at an outrage because the they had to repurchase the same game, for additional characters and balance changes, they felt should have been included in MvC3.

The salt in the community resides in the fact that fighting games are very competetive, 1v1 scenarios. If you lose a match, its no ones fault but your own, however, most FGC members attribute to their loss as being "lag" or "cheesy tactics." While it is possible that a game's outcome could be hindered by lag, it usually is not the case for most matches. In fact this game's netcode is very well done. I urge the community to reconsider this game as a whole, instead of dismissing it entirely.

Admittingly the game does have its quirks, but it has a lot more to offer underneath the grief of the FGC.
