Firstly, you don't need to have played the first Anodyne to fully enjoy Anodyne 2!

That being said, this game remains true to the first in delivering, above all else, an atmospheric experience. Anodyne 2 has a fantastic combination of surreal environments, excellent character dialogue, music, and bizarre retro graphics that give you a dreamlike experience as you explore "New Theland," experiencing the story of Nanocleaner Nova.

As the game's description states, you play Anodyne 2 in both 3D and 2D. The 3D environments serve the primary purpose of exploration and story development, whilst 2D areas are akin to unique minature dungeons set in the subconsciousness of characters you meet. The exploration, which embraces the player's ability to abuse game mechanics and even walk out of bounds, is rewarding to the curious. The dungeons are puzzling and beautifully individual, but not so long that they become gimmicky.

The story is intriguing, and sometimes vague. Like the first Anodyne, the core story is not the main attraction of the writing. The best writing is to be found in the characters you meet and often have to shrink inside of. You will find them ruminating about their internal troubles, and the dungeons within their minds reflect this in the nature of their puzzles and settings. As a corollary, the main character Nova also faces a number of inner turmoils that the player will find themselves reflecting on.

Beyond this, there are many ways in which the game will continue to subvert your expectations and surprise you as you play. This is another huge contribution made towards the surreal atmosphere of the game.
