First impressions are unfortunately poor.

Controls do not seem at all suited for Valve Index.

The initial menu area seems to have various things to play with that have no interactivity (various targets). There appear to be various items to grab and throw, but I could not find a throw button.

I need to almost point my wrists downwards in order to aim straight forwards. I actually could not even complete the first mission as it was so uncomfortable.

Buttons seem to show Oculus controls, as they reference pressing the "X" button, which the Index does not have. It also shows what appears to be the oculus controller in the tutorial menu (again, despite playing on the Index).

The motion to reload (swinging the gun / controller downwards) frequently causes grenade mode to activate. Activating grenade mode is squeezing the grip, which while a button on the occulus is fine, but on the Index it's touch / force activated, which is problematic.

I could not find any button that would pause the game. So I had to wait to get killed in order to choose "no" to continuing to see if there were any options in settings pertaining to these problems, which there did not seem to be.

It's a shame. I was excited when I saw this as a have many memories of playing Operation Wolf on the NES. I'm hoping these issues can be addressed, otherwise it's probably going to be refunded.

Update: It's been pointed out to me the Index controllers aren't actually listed as supported. So I'll be refunding, and any of my complaints are likely a non-issue as long as one is using one of the listed supported controller devices.

So I'm at work today when the game released. I had left the computer on so I could remote in and start the download. May only be 2 some GB, but rural DSL is what it is. I start seeing the posts & streamers citing poor performance, crashes, failure to launches. I start getting worried. Which category will I fall under?

My desktop is:
Windows 10
Slightly overclocked i5 3570 (it's summer, can't run it too hot)
16GB RAM
2x GTX 970 SSC (Driver 368.81 - July 12)
Samsung 850 EVO SSD (being that the content is mainly computed / procedurally generated, this may not actually be better than an HDD but at under 3GB install size, why not?)

Get home, launch the game, no crash means it's a good start so far. Gameplay starts, and I'm getting low 20 FPS. Bummer. Tweak around in the settings for a few minutes, with the main changes being to turn off vsync (on by default) and raise FPS limit. Oddly, it seems that my framerate would be somewhere around half of whatever the selected option is. Setting to unlimited I get into low triple digits. I end up setting in game to unlimited, and using nVidia control panel to set adaptive vsync on. I'm now getting 60 FPS some 98% of the time, admittedly with some stutter when I first enter planet, system, etc.

The different atmospheres so far are quite diverse and impressive. My starting planet was a miserable frozen craphole with poison rain and extremely spread out resources, which made escape it so much more gratifying. The varied weather systems will generally keep you from getting too carefree while exploring, but recharging your primary defenses are usually an easily acquired resource away.

I'm using an xbox one elite controller, and it controls wonderfully. On screen displays match the input device as far as xbox / keyboard on the fly. I'm not set up for PS4 controller on my computer, so I can't verify that unfortunately.

It's certainly not perfect. While flying low over planets, geometry pop in is fairly frequent. Some textures are quite a bit less than appealing. Landing your ship precisely, especially on a landing pad (which negates losing resources when taking off again) still feels far too reliant upon luck. Objectives seem to randomly appear and dissapear, seemingly without a way of checking them within any menu. I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out what the game wanted me to do with my Analyzing Visor becuase the objective checklist dissapeared so quickly that I still am not sure what to do.

It's probably pretty obvious by now I don't write too many reviews. I just felt it was necessary to point out that while many players are likely having issues, not everyone is. The game could definitely use some work, but with the passionate sounding dev team, hopefully patches will be quick.
