Great realistic shooter that feels just arcady enough to keep the good times rolling, but realistic enough to be taken seriously and promote critical thought and cooperation as much as common core shooter gameplay. Perfectly fine matchmade but even better with friends.

One of the best comeback stories in modern videogames. Strongly recommend for any would-be scifi adventurer into spaceships, alien worlds and space exploration, and base building or resource exploiting. I absolutely HATED this game at release after it absolutely botched the landing in apocalyptic fashion, turning all of the hype around it into one of the most stunningly underwhelming and disappointing slogs I'd ever played. That said, the commitment of the development team to rectify that massive blunder is one of the most admirable efforts I've ever seen out of a developer. They could have taken the money and ran, but they really dug in to make their game as great as they dreamed about in their head before launch and this game has come a LONG way in a BIG way because of that, and is an entirely different and far more worthwhile experience. Just watch a video of what this game was like at launch and compare that against the history of even just the first 4 updates yourself for the proof in the pudding. BARRING the catastrophic launch, this game could serve as a great template for continuing to support a released videogame. If they stopped the updates right now, hell even 3 updates ago, the game would stand as a valiant success against the odds of a pointedly deserved animosity.

The history of this game starting as one of the hardest failures in the industry wont be forgotten but that arguably serves it well, and makes for a great story for just how much hard work and dedication can improve even the worst of failures into a rousing success.

Was fun for the first few weeks and brought a lot of good ideas with some solid fundamentals but ultimately became repetitive and underwhelming and I wound up dropping it. I suspect this was a result of player expectations changing the course of the games development over its years in the oven, and the fact that it probably needed yet another few more years to fully flesh out based on the directional shift that was made. Got sick of the town board very quickly, the only feasibly effective of the woefully few ways to advance in the mid game. The game Desperately needed other avenues for players to level and thus explore more of the dungeons endgame content. Every time I felt accomplished by getting to the next tier of resources through grinding, was greeted with frustrating discoveries that such resources ultimately weren't as profitable as I'd hoped, and grinding them over even the most basic ones was not even worth it XP wise, which I would be stuck competing for grabbing from several others most times I played. The community interactions had its moments and at times felt cohesive as a faction, but really just wound up being the occasional scrappy pvp groups and super groups that could buy up the towns directing their courses. Probably would have been a way better experience if I was in one of those larger guilds for some more chaotic PvP. Somehow stuck the grueling "Treadmill" in the mid-game, a feat I haven't experienced in an MMO since aforementioned Runescape, but at least there you knew what you were in for. Was probably supposed to be more like the PVP-centric Albion than Runescape but wound up landing somewhere in the middle as player input steered the course of its development. Seems to expect that same kind of commitment but lacks the necessity of commitment to a single trade at a time, and the economic mechanics and sinks that made such ventures worth it in Runescape and probably Albion(Here's where I admit I havent played that one, only read about it).

tl;dr Now that the honeymoon is over, I don't know how much has changed since I stopped playing but based on recent reviews seemingly not much. Unless some drastic overhaul appears, I can't recommend anyone make the kind of commitment this game wants from you in good faith UNLESS you can manage to find and become a part of a good community in a server somewhere.

Had me genuinely, physically grateful and relieved when one of a dozen copy-pasted NPCs gave me some money for some bread, some wet wipes to clean myself, and a porn mags and cigarettes to help get me through this cruel world. Eventually wound up becoming a self-sustainable kingpin meth dealer with ramshackle compounds all over the city and no fear whatsoever of the crushing cold. Gets pretty heavily repetitive at times, but is very immersive in spite of it. Even better, and certainly easier, with friends.

tl;dr: Really good, but fix the crashes ASAP. The only souls game I've played yet that has crashed on me, and more over frequently enough to be frustrating.

This is a rock solid addition to fromsofts ace formula of games, though it still regrettably falls into familiar shortcomings, particularly in boss design. I feel it worth mentioning in fairness that its more noticeable the more of these types of games you've played before this one. While that familiar and always satisfying feeling of overcoming tough enemies is still there in spades, there's still very little in the way of stand-out boss fight moments. They also continue to abuse the ever tiresome, growingly recognizable fromsoft crutch that they've leaned too hard on for too many games now with their boss design, where bosses have two of the same or similar attacks with one holding off the moment of anticipation, or one with an innocuous or even sometimes jarring pause in the middle, both designed specifically to throw off dodge timing... However other than that and an obnoxiously designed attack for a secret boss, there's still a good variety here.

The potatoes and soup to go with the meat of the boss battles is still undeniably quality of course. Beautifully crafted world, glorious assortment of spells and weapons to suit any kind of player, and the transition into a mapped, more open-ended world lends itself very well to the innate feeling of adventure these games already capitalize on. Scratches that soulsborne itch wonderfully. I would reccomend it to anyone.

The complete Halo experience. Worth every penny. You probably already know about Halo and if you do then you probably already know this is obviously worth buying. If you don't and never played Halo but are peripherally interested, this is also definitively the place you should start. This is one of the few video games in existence virtually immune from causing buyers remorse... unless you hate FPS games I suppose, in which case stay away, but the Halo games might very well change your mind.

*ADDED NEW SECTION TO THIS REVIEW AT BOTTOM FOR CAMPAIGN LAUNCH AND 12/14/2021 MP UPDATE*

This part of the review is limited in scope to the "Beta" of the free to play multiplayer that has currently released before the campaign of the game has come out. Though by all metrics and admission of 343i developers themselves, this multiplayer is effectively what it will be on launch day, with all maps and weapons included. That's certainly not a problem at all though, because they absolutely nailed the online multiplayer gameplay, arguably the most important thing for them to get right. If you liked the older pre-343 Halos multiplayer then you'll love this one. They did just enough new things to keep it interesting while keeping true to the old core of the games "feel". Just understand however, that as of the time of this review, the ONLY thing they got right about this game is the Gameplay. Everything else surrounding it is prime time corporate cancer. There has been blunder after blunder in design that directly opposes the development teams supposed core philosophies of avoiding FOMO and passively progressing through a fully open-ended customization. At first it was puzzling that they would abandon a perfect matchmaking, battlepass, and event schema that outclassed anything else in the industry with what they pulled off in the MCC game. So puzzling in fact that the nature of not making sense leaves only one alternative theory: 343i and XGS have made it clear they'd rather make a game designed to take your money instead, and hide behind the excuse of the multiplayer being FTP. While the gameplay we all know and love is there in spades, make no mistake that Halo as a franchise has well and truly fallen. Fallen to money-grubbing greed or design incompetence, or quite possibly both. At least we'll always Remember Reach.

Hopefully everything else about the MP of this game will be fixed some point and this review just winds up looking silly, but if nothing else it will server as proof that things weren't always as great as they were. Or it will otherwise serve as one of the many in the chorus of the regretful swan song for the MP of this game to inevitably die before it ever truly takes off.

Upcoming MP update 12/12/2021:
Looks like 343i have finally realized their mistakes and plan to add several playlists permanently to the MP this coming Tuesday, and taken their first steps in addressing the abysmal state of the progression systems challenge structure. While its definitely praiseworthy that they addressed this glaring problem promptly, It still doesn't excuse the state the game was in when they released it. I never really even touched on the netcode issues they're also working on presently, and kept this review focused on the more important flaws. Thankfully released MP early, to give them time to get the feedback necessary to prove to them how catastrophically misplaced their design decisions about the MP really were. While the storefront is still wholly scummy and predatory, they're at least making moves in the right direction to salvage this MP experience into what it should have been from the onset, and deserve to be commended for it, but I'll still be leaving the earlier review here as a monument to their sins.

Post-Launch, Campaign release 12/12/2021:
The campaign is great, and I assume Heroic would be the perfect difficulty to experience it on given my time with Legendary. The story felt "light" compared to older installments, but certainly serviceable. While it feels strange to experience a Halo title with only a few traditional level-style experiences broken up by a sizable open world, they incorporated it here very well, and the grapple hook was the perfect choice for this setting. While the collectathon elements do feel a bit checklist-y toward the end of the game, most of the valuables are usually obtained by just playing the game naturally, very seldom do you have to go very out of the way of missions and brute bases. The checkpoint system also never put me in difficult positions I couldn't find myself a way out of, but that being said Legendary is definitely over-tuned as far as bosses go. Looking forward to running through again when Co-op releases.

Amazing game. Got it on sale for 25 dollars, was worth every penny and more. If you're only peripherally interested in this genre or stealth games in general, get it if you can find it on sale and you'll still likely be satisfied even if you never pick it up again. At 25 dollars its damn near a must-have,. If you love this genre or stealth games in general you shouldn't care about whether or not its on sale, just get it. You won't regret it.

Pros:
-Phenomenal gameplay, extremely satisfying to pull of group executes and trick gaurds.
-Great characters and character chemistry/dialouge
-Perfectly follows golden rule if bought on sale, Main story 25 hours
-Probably 25 more at least for a completionist run.
-Highly replayable, wanted to jump right back in after beating.
Cons:
-very basic, but serviceable story.
-soundtrack is great but gets repetitive.
-Edge of viewcones can sometimes weirdly ambiguous and hard to gauge.
-Quicksave reminder is far too frequent for a first time playthrough, cleverly designed though.

Barely rec with friends. Definitely rec with mods, but "Fix it with mods" is a poor mentality. Its been 6 and a half years and there is still no reliable early transport. This was a problem long fixed in both versions of the mod with one simple inclusion: bikes. A perfectly reasonable non-immersion-breaking way to elevate the game from survival running-simulator to at the very least survival biking-simulator that might at least keep you from alt-tabbing out of or stop paying attention to altogether while you wait to get from point A to point B. I kept two quarters on my desk for YEARS purely because of Day Z, and the sad part is everyone who played the game since EA knows exactly why without me having to explain it. Every other measurable aspect has come a long way since EA: base building, zombie behaviour, weapons, survival elements, etc. So the games still playable, certainly with friends, and definitely with mods. However, there is still ZERO excuse for the lack of easily accessible early game transportation. Your character constantly sprinting large distances is the opposite of immersive, a slog of unabashed tedium that's existed far too long in a game of this scope. There shouldn't be ATVs on every road or anything like the arma 3 mods often do, and actual cars should continue to be a hard-fought goal to obtain and maintain from scratch, but its ridiculous to think nobody in Chernarus owned a damn bicycle to help your player get to where they decide to go even just a little bit faster.
