Considering the game is in a near alpha state, it's been an absolute blast.

Can't wait to see what's to come.

Do you remember the old "choose your own adventure" stye books? For those of you who grew up with physical books, that is.

Suzerain plays out as a "choose your own adventure" novel, but with politics instead of horror. You experience first hand the challenges of running a country, the struggle to stick to your word, election promises, and take care of your people - dealing with more complexities than you through possible.

Or your run it all into the ground.

The game is a visual treat, with an excellent UI that immerses you along with a soundtrack that adds to the mood and immersion, without becoming jarring or annoying.

Suzerain is a gem.

At the end of a long day at work, if you want to put yourself under the command of a middle aged alcoholic with anger issues and take military objectives, this is it.

This is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. It's well made, runs well, easy to drop in and out of, and has so much room for future expansion and content. I've been enjoying Arrowhead Studios games since Magicka and they continue to knock it out of the park.

Unfortunately, their need for funding means they ended up in bed with Sony Entertainment which has done it's best to squander every bit of joy and goodwill that the developers worked hard to produce.

This isn't a condemnation of Arrowhead Games, nor is it a condemnation of the quality and enjoyability of the game.

It is however a condemnation of Sony and their anti-consumer practices that have marred the hard work of a studio that has been producing excellence for awhile now.

Consider this 'A Report To The Shareholders'.

A fun auto-battler with a bunch of classic RPG classes, a good number of unlocks, charming style, and a difficulty that keeps me engaged. It feels like it mixes parts of Loop Hero and Slay the Spire-esque upgrades.

I'm fairly sure I got the key for this game as a freebie with another game I got, and I've played it more than the game I set out to purchase in the first place.

Shoutout Dale Turner for this little gem.

A good base concept and a fun game to fool around with for the price.

The developer definitely did their best to add some depth to it, but it doesn't quite all add up in the end to what I think would really grab folks on a deeper level.

If it's on sale and it interests you, grab it. Three our four bucks is pretty cheap entertainment, and for some reason I do keep coming back to it every now and then...

If you find this game on sale for anywhere less than a few bucks per copy, buy it and screw around with your friends.

It isn't worth the full price at all, but it's a fun little Unreal Tournament style experience for hanging around with friends.

I can't recommend it, but it's free and worth a shot. It never felt predatory, so I don't think you have anything to lose by trying it out.

My biggest criticism is that it does so many things right that Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown get wrong, but it fails hard in what Tarkov and Showdown got right.

I found myself not caring about what happened inside of the matches in The Cycle. Nothing felt weighty or like it had any point. Everything looked good and was well made, but I just couldn't find myself caring about progression. Most of my matches felt empty, I constantly was fleeing super-attentive AI and either getting ambushed by other players while running, or simply ambushed.

I'm not mad about dying, but I can't be arsed to go slow and play carefully because the game feels like a bore when doing that.

TL;DR

All the pieces of something great are here in a pile, but they don't really come together.

Cookie Clicker isn't about clicking on a cookie.

It's about you and me. It's about our relationship to work and capital.

It isn't so much a game as it is an ambient tool of self-reflection.
