TL;DR: If you are in any way, shape or form a fan of the Dirt franchise's previous instalments, this game is not worth your time and especially not your money. Codemasters should be ashamed at putting out this shovelware.

How Codemasters went from producing the almost masterpiece that is Dirt Rally 2.0, to this steaming pile of barely mediocre garbage is beyond me. Going into this I was hoping (and expecting) for a Dirt 2 or Dirt 3 style handling model that strikes a lovely balance between simulation and arcade that we've all come to know and love from Codies, but instead we've been given these mobile game-tier physics that are so hilariously inconsistent and one dimensional that I had to check if this game hadn't been farmed out to some 3rd party developer.

And not only that, before you even get to be subjected to the awful handling model that makes the original Watch Dogs look like Gran Turismo or Assetto Corsa, you get to be subjected to the incredibly annoying and cringeworthy contributions of Donut Media, who have been enlisted not only to record all of the voiceovers for the event tutorials/intros, but also some awful podcast that plays automatically seemingly at random in the menus.

Graphically at least the game looks quite nice with great weather effects and lighting, but the removal of any and all forms of anti-aliasing other than TAA garbage is a huge letdown, with VERY noticeable ghosting, and odd sparkling of reflective surfaces like they have a fine golf ball texture to them instead of being smooth. The damage modelling may as well be completely removed too, with the procedural damage of previous Dirt games having been thrown out the window for a pre-generated damage model that looks garbage and doesn't match up to how the cars feel when colliding with each other and with the environment.

The career races are very same-y, it does not take long at all for the game to start feeling repetitive which doesn't bode well, it's just as well the campaign is so short because I don't think I could handle racing through Brazil in buggies for the 827th time. The throwdown events against the supposed big bads amount to little more than a distraction, if anything they're actually easier than the campaign races because you don't have to deal with passing more than 1 braindead AI racer.

Overall, don't waste your money on this trite. If you haven't got it already, go get yourself a cheap key for Dirt 3 and play that instead, it's a far more interesting and fulfilling game than D5 is, and unfortunately short of massive changes in the fundamentals of the game Dirt 5 will be destined for bargain bins and deep discounts ad infinitum. I can only hope that the next Dirt game doesn't repeat the same mistakes of this one, but given that EA now owns Codies I have a bad feeling we're only in for a lovely helping of Games-as-a-Service garbage with DLC and microtransactions galore.

A+ gunplay, fun to play alone or with friends, well-optimised on all types of hardware, responsive and friendly community and developers, what more could you want? CS:GO, eat your heart out.
