Spiritfarer is a game that came out of the blue a year agp at E3 2019. This game, and A Way to the Woods (another game I hope to see out as well) were the only two out of that entire conference that had me excited. Suffice it to say I was very happy to see it finally arrived on Steam.

Well, to say it was very good is a vast understatement. This game has a very unique and dare I say it original concept. Without spoiling it, the synopsis is this: You play as Stella the new boatsman who replaces Charon as the deity that guides spirits into the afterlife, hence your title and the namesake of the game itself being "Spiritfarer". You will travel around the world of spirits completing requests and gathering resources to improve your vessel to make traversal and resource management easier.

That's literally what the game is about. That and the fact you meet a wonderful cast of characters along your journey. Each of them you will get to know as well as Stella as the story progresses. Other than that, the game uses a lot of abstract storytelling to really great effect asides from dialogue the characters tell you.

Be aware regarding this game it is a collect-a-thon and you will need to collect a lot of resources in order to complete it. If you don't like that idea then you may not like this game, although I would also say that managing resources is not that difficult. The game has a very good crafting system. Of course this also means a bit of backtracking as well but otherwise it only felt for me a bit grindy at the beginning of the game. Your experience though may differ in this area.

This game plays like an action/adventure side-scroller but revolves around events and areas where you need to collect items or do quests. There is no combat in this game which thankfully works in this games' favour.

I also have to praise the soundtrack of this game. Nothing else to really say other than so GOOD.

This game is ultimately about death and letting go and my oh my it does this splendidly. This game made me feel all kinds of emotions and I enjoyed every bit of the experience. I will not say anymore other than buy this game for you and anyone else you think will enjoy it. Heck, buy it for your whole family! Just play this game, play it and enjoy the experience. Spiritfarer is in my opinion alongside Ori: Will of the Wisps one of the best games of 2020 and that everyone should play it.

Unfortuntely, as much as I enjoy the Splinter Cell franchise, this game is a buggy mess. It's such a shame because I want to like it. It's story is excellant and gameplay is not bad. However, this PC port of the game was horribly optimised. On the last mission at JSA headquarters I couldn't even hear any character audio which really sucks. I have since uninstalled this game. If you want to get this game, I recommend 360 version only or hopefully a patched version on PC. Do not buy the Steam port.

This game is as beautiful-looking as it plays good. If you are looking for a game with:

-Great, gripping narrative
-Great Gameplay
-Great Soundtrack
-Great visual/art style.
-Great game all around

Then this is YOUR game. If you are into platformers, this is a great game for you. This is not an EASY platformer either. In fact, once you beat the game and want to challenge yourself some more, there are some hard as hell achievements to go after which will no doubt keep you wanting to come back.

Though Ori and the Blind Forest does not tell a story with a huge amount of dialect, it does not need to. The characters themselves are quick to identify with which I must give the developers an A+ for because within the first five minutes of the game at the end of the Prologue (which I recommend you do before playing the main story), I was crying. This game will pull at your heartstrings. This is a story that tells one of tragedy. The way the story is portrayed is beautiful. The soundtrack really sets the tone of it too. You will not just feel sad for Ori, you will feel sad for the other characters too, even the villainess.

I cannot recommend this game enough, this is by far, one of the BEST games I have ever played on Steam by far. My only, ONLY gripe with this game is that there are some areas which, once you complete you cannot return to if you wish to hunt for collectibles which means you cannot get 100% completion if you miss those collectibles. I hope the devs can somehow fix this. Asides from that though, this game deserves all the praise and recognition it has been receiving from the public. This is, A GREAT GAME.

My rating:
9.5/10

The only reason it lost the 0.5 was due to the issue of some areas become closed off permanately so if you miss the collectibles, you miss out for good unless you replay the game from the beginning. But don't let that stop you from playing this game. It is great, a worthy addition to anyone's Steam Library or on any other platform this is available.
