Looks like I never reviewed this game. Here it goes:

I loved the original game (on unreal), the lore, the story, everything. and followed BlackCatGames for years, waiting and waiting for the sequel. Then, Valve bought them. Updates stopped flowing with a promise that one day, Alien Swarm: Infested would be released. I believe it was another 3 years until it finally came. It is pretty obvious the reason Valve released this game for free the way they did, was to get the Source SDK out there with a moddable client, without a buy-in from one of their other games, to try and re-vitalize the modding community momentum that once brought them to their fame and glory and powerhouse they are today, back on the gold source engine.

Regardless of the behind-the-scenes, when it was finally released, I fell in love with this game all over again, the lore, the story. everything. Sadly, they only ever released a short campaign. Letting the potential for a pay-by-episodes DLC store die through neglect in hopes that the community would pick up the slack. The community tried, but there is no way for us fans to truly capture the vision BlackCat had for this universe and franchise.

Alien Swarm on Source is probably the last there will ever be in the franchise, and the game is pretty much dead (unless you have friends to play with in CO-OP, which I highly recommend for some quick fun on LAN). But the game series is pretty much dead for solo-players. RIP.

A wonderful concept that is plagued by a bad developmental cycle. Horrendous optimization, low performance, eating up disk space, gameplay breaking bugs between patches, crashing. Not to mention it risks corrupting your entire harddrive and destroying all other game saves you have.

I've had to reinstall the game twice just to be able to boot it again due to some unknown bug. For people with limited bandwidth, this would spell bad news considering the games disk space requirements (which it doesn't need to use in the first place, the game has gigabytes of junk code and junk assets doing nothing in there).

My friend had her entire harddrive corrupted because of a mod for the damn thing. It honestly sounds like grounds for a lawsuit considering the data that could have been lost. If only we were American...

It's, quite frankly, not worth your money until they fix it. Which they won't, but people keep throwing money at them since who doesn't want to have their own private jurassic park?

Great idea, horrendous execution. This game will never leave its beta stage. They are greedy for your money and keep producing new content instead of fixing the broken content available to you. Spend your money elsewhere, don't set this as the standard for game development. Don't let bad and greedy companies get away with this please. It's the only way we're going to be able to make devs change their mind about the quality of the products they deliver.
