I don't write reviews for games often, but I had to for Lunacid as it deserves so much more attention. Before you even continue reading, please go buy and play it, because I promise you this game is EASILY worth every penny.

I blinked and it feels like 7 hours of gameplay went by. I don't know what I was expecting going into Lunacid, but it certainly wasn't this level quality. I saw people in the reviews compare this to King's Field quite a bit, but I've never played it, so I had no point of reference to go off of and went in completely blind. All I can say is wow . There's very few other games, AAA games even, that have held my attention and truly captivated me in a way that this one currently is.

I feel like far too many games out there nowadays suffer from one of two issues for me. They either make the reward the focus and put exploration on the backburner, or they don't trust the player to be competent, and will flood you with things such as tutorials, quest markers, etc. This game doesn't do that. In Lunacid, the exploration is as much your reward as whatever item you find. I can tell after beating it, it's gonna be one of those games where I wish I could wipe my memory of it so I can play blindly again.

It drops you in its world and lets you explore it without holding your hand, and trusts you to figure out what to do and where to go without putting a marker on your screen. I can't remember the last time a game latched onto my curiosity in this way and made me want to keep pushing forward, just to see what's around the next corner. Maybe Outer Wilds, but before that and to the same extent? I don't even know. It's areas are very cleverly and thoughtfully designed with things like interconnectedness, hidden paths, hidden walls, etc. There's plenty of interesting lore to find as well if you're looking for it and paying attention.

The retro feel is amazing and can be tweaked to your liking through various settings (it even has an in game manual as a homage to older RPG booklets!), and the dark fantasy setting is done fantastically well. The atmosphere can be both oppressive at times and yet whimsical and thought provoking. Artistically it's very clearly inspired by fromsoftware games, namely Dark Souls and Bloodborne (probably Kings Field too if the reviews are anything to go by), which wasn't lost on me as a fan of them, and was really cool to see. The music is also very well made and fitting for each area. There where a few points where I stood there and just let the soundtrack play.

I think the only area for improvement is maybe the combat as it's a little basic, but not terrible for a game trying to emulate a retro feel. It does have a system of enemy weaknesses and dismemberment however, which while somewhat surface level, still caught me off guard and was neat to figure out on my own.

All in all as I said at the start, please do give Lunacid chance. It hurts seeing this game get so little attention at only 6.6k reviews, as it's clear that so much love and passion was dumped into every facet of this game. This has been a genuine joy to play through so far, and I hope to see a 2nd one some day. :)

One of the best games I've ever played. It's literally DnD except they made a risky choice and removed the part where you have to cancel your weekly session because that one guy had something going on and can't make it. Turned out to be a great decision.

The game is far better now. Bugs have been mostly fixed and performance has been smoothed. Plenty of content to go around, and far more worth your money at $10. Give it another chance.

Amazing game that's ruined by an otherwise bad PC port. Most of the day one issues that were here when it launched on Steam have been fixed at this point to give the devs credit, and it runs smoothly for me. I haven't had any graphical issues or crashes at all. So why am I not recommending you buy this game, you may ask?

Unfortunately, just about any time you speak to an NPC, it sounds horribly compressed and kinda like they're speaking into a can. It's most noticeable with certain 's' noises, and it's akin to a metallic-y buzzing that you'll hear if you're using even semi-decent headphones. Once you notice it, it'll bug the everloving ♥♥♥♥ out of you. It got so annoying to listen to that I literally had to stop mid-playthrough and just put the game down until it can be fixed. I've tried everything I possibly can to fix it, I'm not even kidding. Everything from verifying the games files, to reinstalling the game altogether. I've tried switching audio ports to a 3.5mm jack from USB. I've tried changing just about anything you can possibly imagine with my audio settings but nothing I've done fixes it.

Everything else in the game is fine. Combat is fun, the open world is interesting, the story is great so far. But good lord, please fix the dialogue audio. I've literally never had this problem with any other game, and I would really love to listen to people speak in it without wanting to shoot my brains out. I'll come back and change this to a positive review if this gets fixed, because everything else about this game has been fantastic.

(P.S. - If you had this bug and managed to somehow fix it, please let me know in the comments of this review. I would love to be able to actually enjoy the game.)

It really saddens me that this is my first negative review for a game on Steam.

Don't let my hours on record fool you, I played this game for easily 100+ hours back before it came to Steam. As it stands right now though, I don't think I'll be putting even another 10 minutes into it.

As of coming to Steam, the game has been updated so now, every time you enter a new region, all of your gear is completely reset. It's entirely backwards and goes against the fundamental exploration aspect of Cube World that made it so fun. It feels really bad when you leave a zone as your gear is basically your character's level since the skill tree is gone. It'd be like playing an RPG but every time you enter a new area, your character is put back to level 1.

As for the dev of the game? He seems to have completely abandoned Cube World as of releasing it on Steam, so I wouldn't hold my breath on it getting any better than it is. If there were some way to go back to the alpha version of the game I would absolutely recommend buying and playing it, but this ain't it, and I highly advise not spending your money on this game as it stands right now. Such wasted potential.

I just beat the game and I've gotta say, you have to check it out. It's the most innovative shooter I've played in years.
