Difficult to discuss this in any real detail without spoiling stuff, which leaves my usually-breathless writing in a huff. Spoiler-free: its forebears wore their inspiration on their sleeves. This does the same. Half the time, it's more tactful about it. Half the time, it's less. It is, nonetheless, extremely distinctive and stands alone. You can describe this, breathlessly, as a nonsensical string of video games, anime, books, and ballet - but Silent Hill can be described as Resident Evil-♥♥♥-The Mist-♥♥♥-Lynch. A little easy, maybe, but the plotting does the heavy lifting. Probably the best survival horror game in the last fifteen years; not that there's a ton of competition. Play this blind, for the love of god. Not even some cheeky "spoiler-free" review! This needs to be blind as a bat!!!! You'll get contaminated otherwise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Early Access Review
"A REAL nut... Feels like every bone in your body comes out the head of your ♥♥♥♥... Say no more. I'm done. Fall asleep in 2min."
- Ice-T

Holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this is good. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I played the demo that released earlier this year for about two weeks straight, deriving a good dozen hours out of two weapons and six levels. This early access release is going to at least double that, especially with the Cyber Grind.

Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal's fusion of FPS paradigms with elements more evocative of action games was one of the absolute best parts of those games, with Doom Eternal becoming a full-on character action FPS. Ultrakill goes even harder on this front, and not just because it has a style meter. Every single weapon and their alt-fires have a unique role in your moveset that is both useful for survival and style, and there's hidden tricks and interactions that allow for even more insanely sick gameplay.

The game's movement is insanely fun to do, and it carries with it an equally high skill ceiling that has enough elements tutorialized that you have a fair shot at figuring out the rest. The levels that you slide, dash, and shoot through are packed to the brim with an incredibly good roster of mooks just begging for their blood to be bathed in - I think Doom Eternal still wins out here, but Ultrakill is still an early access title and I can absolutely see it eclipsing Eternal by its release.

Bosses, however, holy ♥♥♥♥ Ultrakill wins by a country mile. The most mediocre boss that I circlestrafed to death still has some fairly tight movement required to do that, and its armored spots aren't conducive to it unless you move just right. And that's the weakest boss. Every single other boss has a ton of ways to play around it stylishly that aren't just circlestrafing to win, half of them become regular mooks that you have to fight while dodging other enemies, and it's got both a Vergil and a Credo homage - and both of them are about as good as their Devil May Cry equivalents. Fighting them on Violent gave me an adrenaline rush that I rarely feel, and finally kicking their ass made me feel like a god amongst women.

I can understand wanting to wait for this to exit Early Access, and I can understand not being into this fusion of character action and FPS nearly as deeply as I, but I think this release, only a third-finished, is easily one of the best games of not just this year, but the last five years.

It's everything I could have possibly wanted from a new Devil May Cry game after waiting a decade. It's packed to the absolute brim with nods, fanservice, callbacks, and content that makes longtimes fans like me completely nut. There are some things lost in transition I take umbrage with in that they're small things that add lots of high-level depth, but as a casual player I don't notice them at all.

It's very easily my game of the year and is instantly one of my favorites of all time.

OVERKILL, THE MANNCONOMY DOES NOT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ WORK IN A GAME THAT COSTS MONEY.
THE MANNCONOMY THAT AFFECTS STATS OF PRE-EXISTING GUNS DOES NOT WORK IN A GAME PERIOD.

THIS IS NOT A GAME WORTH ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ $135 IN DLC.

THis game is really fun for the first 50 levels, but UVHM and up are really grindy and lock you into using certain weapons. Overpower 8 will lock you into using certain builds, and probably force you to use certain characters. Fun, but only for a bit.

7/10, fun with friends and Gibbed.
