I didn't mind the cat lady. She didn't feel forced, because the story was about her from the start and she wasn't shoehorned in. The only thing she did that slightly annoyed me was try to "understand and befriend" the big bad final enemy, when I felt like that enemy was objectively evil and I was down to absolutely destroy them.

I'm glad they made MSQ more difficult, the main scenario was disappointingly easy most of the time before now. Sometimes bosses take multiple tries first time, and that's okay.

Story was good as usual, and emotionally engaging.

Finished the game a week before graduating college, makes a grown-ass man cry 10/10

Don't get the hate, lol

The first 3D sonic game worth playing for the past 11 years.

First off, for the narrative: They finally used the voice actors from the Sonic Boom TV Show, and they added a lot of actual characterization. For example, Amy no longer whines, and Sonic doesn't hate her. He just talks to her like she's a friend, and she isn't obsessed with chasing him. She even has her own goals and aspirations, which was previously unheard of for most Sonic characters. There's a decent amount of fan service injected into the narrative. For example, I saw some creatures that look like the water-monster Chaos, and Sonic once said "This waterfall kind of reminds me of Mystic Ruins." It's forgivable, though, because it isn't too frequent. The characters actually interact in a way that isn't too cheesy or melodramatic and seems fitting of Sonic Characters. Even Eggman's lines reminded me a little bit of Jim Carrey in the Sonic Movies. Sonic himself doesn't try so hard to look cool, he just tries to save his friends.

The gameplay is split between levels that are basically altered Sonic Generations levels (which is fine) and the open world. The old-fashioned levels have fun completionist objectives, with most of them not being too difficult, but a few seem downright impossible. The open world is a bit slow-paced, as you're doing little mini-puzzles and enemy battles to fill out the map, but that way you aren't just doing mind-numbing fast levels over and over. There is a combat system that is a bit basic, but fun nonetheless. It really shines in boss battles, where you play as Super Sonic. Indeed, Super Sonic is no longer an end-game-only gimmick. I was cracking up when some over-the-top Goth Rock started playing during the first major boss, which reminded me of the ridiculousness of a DBZ or Bayonetta Fight.

It's worth mentioning they really shook up the control scheme, so it takes some getting used to, but I didn't think it was very bad at all and it's all re-mappable. Sonic also moves slower than he usually does, so you actually have a chance to react to the level as it's revealed in front of you.

Graphically, the game looks fine. There's not much reason for a Sonic game to be a graphical benchmark, but the style is consistent and the animations are perfect, which is all you should probably care about. The first island, which was in the trailers, was hilariously similar in melancholy and feel to Death Stranding. The rain looked really bad in cutscenes, and I noticed some visual artifacts, but never during gameplay. The landscape and flora looked really nice and detailed. The enemies look like something out of Evangelion, which worked fine and helps you take it a bit more seriously than Eggman's goofy robots.

I can't help but feel like this game is similar to what they wanted Sonic 06 to originally be before its development was cut so short, but that may be my own fantasy.

The music is very calm and melancholic during the open world, but in the levels there's a lot of modern Electronic music, which is very good and unique to this game. Indeed, you aren't just listening to Green Hill Zone again, this game is Jam-Packed with original songs that are actually quality.

I don't give number scores, they're stupid. I just either recommend a game or don't, and this one's recommended.

Best Pay-to-play MMO, hopefully for the foreseeable future.
