I'm amazed how such a good game can instantly become unplayable garbage the moment Gearbox touches it.

It doesn't matter if one doesn't know who the characters are.
It doesn't matter if one doesn't get the deep cuts and in-jokes.
The twin-stick styled gameplay is simple yet addictive. 100% free with no artificial time gates or actions per day.
Characters, buffs, and difficulty mutators are all unlocked by simply playing the game and choosing where to spend accumulated points.
My one and only complaint is that Omaru Polka isn't in the game. Yet.

I want to be good at this game.
I am not.
I will continue to play it anyway.

Chill game w/ birbs. Easy to learn. Complex enough to enable multiple viable strategies. Luck of the draw requires players to be adaptable. Encourages flexible thinking.

Highly recommend.

Remember when you could play the game without it freezing?
Man, those were the days.
I wish I didn't have to rate it positively or negatively. I had a lot of fun with the base game. NG shows promise.
But now the game fails at the most basic level: running without crashing.
Mid-combat, solo instance, simply trying to manage inventory, just walking around -the game freezes without rhyme or reason. It doesn't matter how good your hardware is. Read the recent reviews. Go ahead, play the game. See for yourself.

All that said, I had a lot of fun with the base game, and recent issues don't change that. I won't give a negative review, but for the love of god, do not give SEGA one red cent until they unbork their servers and fix the crashing issue.

Not good, but good enough.
The first R-Type Final had 101 ships that could be obtained through playing the game.
This iteration uses a bizarre in-game currency system and has entire ship development paths locked behind a password for kickstarter backers. I think it's kind of sad that fans of the first will miss out on ships they had access to previously.

Also, the addition of an adaptive difficulty baffles me. Why pick normal difficulty if it's going to get harder? Why pick bydo or r-typer difficulty if it's going to relent when the player hits a rough patch?
I don't know who asked for that feature to be added, but the game doesn't seem to benefit from it in any way unless they plan on removing the difficulty selection altogether. My opinion, not gospel.

R-Type Final 2 manages to be prettier than Final 1, but I feel the level design leaves a lot to be desired. To that end, if the player finds themselves using only 1 out of 99 available ships because the stage layout renders the others almost useless, there must be an issue with the level design.

All that said, it's not bad, nor unplayable. I just find myself unable to recommend it to anyone but fans of the series.
I couldn't recommend it to all fans of the shmup genre as shmups tend to come in many incarnations -this title is a sort of niche within a niche.
I would not recommend this game to anyone who isn't a fan of R-Type.
Fans of R-Type who have not played R-Type Final will probably get a kick out it.
To anyone who has played R-Type Final, skip it. There's nothing new to see here.

Game runs like Launchpad McQuack flies:
Very well, but always ends with a crash.

Do play the game, but don't buy it here. Maybe another platform has a version of the game that doesn't require frequent save-scumming to prevent loss of progression.

Oh Christ. Tripwire bought another game to turn into a DLC vehicle.
When did this happen? I bought it for a fraction of the price (even on sale), which can only mean TW is responsible for the increase. Gameplay has a focus on combat with actual racing as the afterthought. Rubber-band mechanics mean the player will never enjoy a moment of peace after battling their way to first place.

It isn't a bad game at all for a small indie dev. A little jewel in need of a bit of polish.
Now that TW is in charge, it won't get that polish, but you can be 100% sure they'll milk it for all it's worth while adding nothing of value.

There was a time I might have recommended this title. Now I can't, because I know what's going to happen to this game.

Okay, so when it first released, Iceborne had a number of problems. A pointless anti-cheat on top of Denuvo and spaghetti code caused it to eat far more resources than it needed to. Long-time players found their their frame rates dropping like their computers contracted COVID-19.

Good news is that the spaghetti code has been cleaned up a bit in subsequent patches so it runs much better. I'd still like to see those other resource hogs removed from the game, but they aren't stopping me from playing it.

Iceborne only adds 2 new areas: the Hoarfrost Reach and the Guiding Lands.
Not a lot of ice is actually involved, but the critters introduced to MHW are quite challenging. Some are new but many will be familiar to veterans of the series.

For a few reasons previously stated, my initial review of this game was a negative one. As you can see, I've changed it. Can't really complain too much about a game you can't stop playing, right? At least MHW got patched up to run properly -unlike literally every Megaman port on steam.

Get your ♥♥♥♥ together, Capcom.

Well, I can only get about 30 minutes into it before crashing. Reading the forums, I'm starting to understand that random crashes are part and parcel with this game. Some sort of memory leak issue, perhaps? The closest thing to a fix is a post from 2016 directing players to play the beta version of the game. Playing the beta version does not resolve the issue.
I don't think I can recommend this game on steam.
I liked what I played of it. Beautiful game, excellent atmosphere, and a large variety of malevolent ghosts eager to do violence upon your person. Manages to keep the tension and doesn't overplay the jumpscare card.
However, the fact that a known issue has been left unfixed for so long is baffling, and I get the feeling it will never be fixed. I will change my recommendation if it ever does.
