Midnight suns is not what I expected when I heard the makers of XCOM were making a Marvel game. The game has very little in common with XCOM outside of the small turn based skirmishes and picking events from an overworld map.

The first notable difference is the deckbuilding mechanic for heroes abilities. This allowed for quite a bit of customization for each hero and could alter their role in fights significantly. Because all your characters share a turn and you draw a set number of cards per turn it is possible to go multiple turns without drawing a card for a hero which can be frustrating. Building decks and teams for individual missions to combat teammates weaknesses made for some fun tinkering between missions.

The second difference is the social aspect of the Abbey which plays very similar to the Normandy in Mass Effect. That aspect was very hit and miss for me with some characters and events being genuinely interesting to me while others I skipped through completely.

Overall the mix of fun combat, some interesting relationship building with teammates, and deck/ team comp tinkering made for a fun experience I would recommend.

This game takes a lot of inspiration from Slay the Spire. The addition of two party members gives more build variety than you see in other games and the progression that carries over between runs helps level out the difficulty curve.
