Well, its definitely better than the reviews I've read make it out to be. At least at this point in development. Yes there are features missing still. There's a tutorial button that doesn't do anything when you click it, but the core game IS present and IS fun. Really fun. Like, some of the most fun I've had playing an RTS. Its awesome. Going into it, I was expecting much less than what I received and was blown away with how polished it really is.

For the record, I purchased this game at 50% off for $14.99 so for that price I am quite satisfied. That being said, I'm not sure I'd pay $30 for it, but I also have the Steam mentality of "never buy anything full price." So maybe that's a contributing factor. Regardless, its good fun, and while I'd still wait for a sale to buy it, I wouldn't pass it up once it goes on sale.

EDIT: As of Jan. 9, 2015 THIS GAME IS $5. Do not miss this opportunity. This game is easily worth $20, even with that Steam mentality. $5 is a steal for the amount of content you get out of this.

Reviewed in Early Access as of September 23rd, 2014.

Like many others have stated in their reviews, I have always wanted to play a game where I could fly around in space and then find a planet that originally wasn't even visible to the naked eye, and actually land on that planet and walk around on it without a single loading screen. True immersion. A true universe. A few games have tried this, a few have even pulled it off on the technical side, but those games (*cough* X Rebirth *cough*) have never delivered on the actual game side of things.

Rodina does a lot of things right, and only seems to lack in areas that are understandable considering the entire staff behind the game is one person. The game, even at its very early access stage feels nearly complete. The ship feels functional and every individual component doesn't just feel like a prop, they feel like they are there for a reason, because most of the time they are. Flight feels fairly realistic and very intutive. Atmospheric reentry is as challenging as it should be, and combat is challenging on a whole new level. To be able to escape from a firefight by going into Limnal (warp) drive and flying hundreds of AU away in seconds feels amazing and freeing, and the game really gives you an appreciation for the sheer scale that it offers. Even from the very moment I pressed the play button, I was already blown away. Rodina makes no effort to slowly introduce you to the universe you're put in. You simply are. And that is how it should be. Rodina makes no effort to tell you where you should be going and what you should be collecting. You simply do. And that is how it should be. Rodina simply allows the player to play, only guiding the player's progression through an entirely optional series of backstories all unravelling at the same time, and all very well written.

Rodina offers so much content in such an infentile stage, from custom ship designs to an intricate background story to ship upgrades to an entire asteroid belt comprised of hundreds of bodies to land on and explore, you will not find yourself bored any time soon. There is always more to discover and do, and even while the planets are currently baren bodies populated with nothing but enemies and loot, the universe feels populated, and just as the empty void of space has you feeling truly alone, you'll encounter something that has you feeling otherwise.

Do yourself a favor and download the demo. Because of the games completely dynamic nature, there is no scripted cutoff point in the demo, simply play and experience as much as you can for an hour, and if you enjoy what you've experienced, buy the game. It was well worth full price for me.

I accumulated over a thousand hours on this game in two years. Now I go through phases of heavy playing and then no playing for months, but that doesn't change the fact that this game's endless possibilities will ALWAYS present something you haven't yet done. Truth be told, if you don't already own this game, you're probably not a serious PC gamer. And that's fine. If you think sucking is fine. But seriously. Get it. You'll never be bored. Ever.

The first thing I ever created was most likely equivalent to a thruster-powered purple bathtub. Now I create helicopters that shoot nuclear missiles and warn me when I'm too close to a wall and also play Rock-n-Roll McDonald's on constant repeat. Point is, you'll always learn and create more and more.
