Easily one of my favorite games ever. I played Shadow of War when it originally released on the xbox and had an absolute blast. From the diversity of the combat to the adaptability of the enemies, Shadow of War takes the gameplay of its predecessor; Shadow of Mordor, and completely overhauls it. That is not to say Shadow of Mordor is an inferior product. I recommend you play Shadow of Mordor first if you want the full experience Shadow of War has to offer. People complained a lot about the microtransactions when the game first released, and I can understand why. However, the current game has completely removed said microtransactions and you can play through the entire game without even touching the garrison (Which was originally used for microtransactions).
