Let the stigma die. Kill it, if you have to.

This game is great. Personally, I only play the co-op mode, which is nonetheless entertaining.
Nothing is pay-to-win anymore. The only benefit of paying for the celebration edition (and I think it's the only one available anymore) is that you get basically all of the cosmetics pre-unlocked, except for the special achievement ones.
The card system is actually pretty fun to work through--the only downside is the lack of balanced matchmaking in the full multiplayer modes.
No heroes are locked behind a paywall. There aren't any actual loot boxes anymore. NOTHING is pay-to-win!

The stigma early in the game's life was certainly well-deserved, but EA *has* resolved all of the issues. Hence the title of my review.

It starts out really cool, but it immediately drops that and turns into an incredibly boring and repetitive set of fetch quests. Carrying a bunch of stuff on my back and moving slowly through terrain that requires you to move even more slowly is lame. The NPC chatter is ridiculous; I feel like a child being forced to go to Sunday School when I keep getting long walls of dialogue that I didn't ask for.

The visual quality also effectively degrades the longer you play; you start noticing defects that start being the only thing you pay attention to. I've got settings maxed out and the aliasing effects on hair and foliage are still horrifically distracting.

I know number scales are objectively bad, but as a matter of my subjective review, I'd say this game is a solid 3/10.

Holy crap. Not only is this the greatest VR game I've ever played, but it's also now my new favorite game.
On the HTC Vive with my GTX 1060 laptop, the graphics are sub-par, but that's just my hardware limitation.
I have never been more terrified of dark hallways in my life--and dark hallways are always scary. I prefer the sequences where you fight the Combine in more open territory, though all of the combat is great regardless. My only complaint would be that solving the wire puzzles (the ones that appear in the walls) is a little bit tricky if you've got too small of a playing space.

As a final note, I squealed with joy when I heard Space Ocean (my favorite HL1 song) play during a transition into a dimly-lit room with headcrab zombies inside. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm keeping my ears perked up in case I hear Triage at Dawn (my favorite HL2 song).

I played this for 50 minutes and when I was done I was sweating so much all over my head that it was dripping down my nose. It also looked like my hair was soaking wet.

If that isn't a good explanation of why this game is awesome, I don't know what is.

Ya know,
I really wanted to like this game.
Out of its release there were of course tons of major issues and disappointments, and as such was responded with extreme dislike and negative reviews.

I refused to ever buy the game, and I actually only ever got it because my friend gifted it to me as a joke.
Like a lot of people have said before, the newer changes have made the game far more bearable, but even after shoveling hours into the game, there's nothing interesting to do.

There's certainly a lot of interesting things to see, especially with the procedurally-generated creatures and fauna and such, but when everything is unique, nothing is.

The idea of maneuvering a gigantic universe is cool, but inherently pointless. It's made a selling point that you will never explore every single planet, but that's really just a drawback. The gameplay needs to have some sort of satisfactory element of progression. Having no sense of scale within the vast universe just makes it seem like you'll never accomplish anything of real value.

A conclusive statement would be to say that the reasons above are why I dislike the game, but in all earnestness, I dislike it because it doesn't even feel like a game.
