Do you like Neon Genesis Evangelion? I've been a big Hideaki Anno fan ever since the release of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.. Before that, I really didn't understand any of his work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. where, uh, Anno's presence became more apparent. I think End of Eva was his undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of his earlier work. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of A Cruel Angel's Thesis. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics in Komm Susser Todd. In this song, Anno addresses the problems of abusive political authority. Their rendition fo Fly me to the Moon is the most moving pop song of the 1990s, about mo---amy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as, uh, anything I've heard in anime soundtracks. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your ass. Anno's carreer after NGE seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In his live action version of Cuie Honey and, uh, Funky Forest. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Anno's works best within the confines of a bog studio, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Thanatos, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
