Lovely night, just me, some of a car, and That Thing Over There

Beautiful game to look at with a solid CGL under the hood that sucked me in immediately, in no small part by tapping directly into my love for the haunted pines of the PNW, both real and unreal. PD nails the requisite atmosphere with a world that is both haunting and oddly charming, misty dirt roads and hand lettered warnings leading from one otherworldly encounter to the next. There is plenty of spooky atmosphere and tension in surviving the various roadside oddities, but it can also be a very laid-back, cozy affair once you've gotten your bearings and added a few upgrades, to the point you may even find yourself just sitting with the engine off at times, listening to the rain drum against the roof.
The driving is pleasingly tactile with a good sense of grip and weight from the car, as are the auto-repair mechanics which manage to be juuust involved enough to be satisfying but not annoying. The crafting and gathering elements are reasonably frictionless, and while the main story is a bit flat, the environment and its attendant random documents and audio logs paint a compelling picture of a region slowly overcome by weird science, and nature beyond our comprehension.

What to even call this? A big, collaborative virtual art project that's as much about how we experience art as the artwork on display? That sounds about right. If that description doesn't just immediately make you want to exit through the giftshop, do give this a try.
