If you're bored and love ARPGs this will do in a fix. There's not a lot of the meat on the bone though. The end game is boring and the item chase isn't much better. Like I said, you can probably waste a hundred hours or so but don't expect it to retain you like a D2 or something.

So far this is already the best turn-based JRPG I've played since FFX. Classic turn based with multiple twists and ways to parry, dodge, combo with party members, etc. This is everything I've wanted in a JRPG for decades. This is a must play for any JRPG fan.

Edit: Having finished this game multiple times I can now confidently say this is the single greatest game in this genre I've ever played. Step aside Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Legend of Dragoon, etc. A new King is in town and this praise is very well deserved.

Early Access Review
Pros:
Campaign is excellent
Moment-to-moment gameplay feels rewarding
"Combo" system makes pairing skills with each other feel meaningful
WASD movement feels great
Controller gameplay is fluid
Music is incredible

Cons:
Act 3 maps are too large and it drags on too long
Build diversity is poor at best
End Game is too much of a time sink to get anything done
Not enough new content/repeated end game and seasonal activities from the first game
The loot that drops is boring and you don't really get that "AH HA!" moment due to all valuable items coming exclusively from crafting

If you're a fan of ARPGs you will enjoy this game, full stop. It has a lot of issues in it's current iteration but what is here is a very well crafted ARPG experience that will only improve over time.

Incredible. I'm only 11 hours in at the time of review and it's already the best Atlus game I've ever played. If you enjoy the systems and themes of Atlus games there's no way you won't enjoy this. It's all those things plus the most compelling story they've ever told. A must buy for JRPG fans.

Early Access Review
The first major patch of Early Access fixed the majority of the glaring issues. This game has the single most rewarding exploration I've ever experienced. The combat is fun and fluid. The abilities on the different weapon types feel good to use and the weapons themselves feel very different. The story thus far is engaging and I find myself going out of my way to not skip optional dialogue.

The cons are fairly big though. The inventory management as it stands now is very not fun to play and this problem confounds itself the longer you play the game. Running around town(Before you have your home)to go between the storage, vendors, quest npcs, etc is incredibly tedious. It's like they took the idea of a hub town in an ARPG but made it miserable.

The food crafting system could work well if it only applied buffs, but you're required to rely on it for healing throughout the game. Imagine the Blood Vial farming system from Bloodborne but you have to farm the ingredients for the vials and then return to the hub world or a nearby fire and craft the blood vials. Yes, it is just as annoying as it sounds.

The cons, however, do not outweigh the excellently designed game lying underneath. The combat is very rewarding. Parrying feels great and doesn't have the strange timing delay present in most Fromsoft games. While some people may be turned off by the higher-than-average difficulty of the standard enemy in the early game; by the time you have a few hours under your belt you'll be treating them like the fodder they are. Your attacks and dodges feel weighty(Albeit dodge is a bit more floaty but it makes sense given the sometimes absurd range your enemy's attacks have)and feel good to use.

Bosses all have different timing for their attacks, even between attacks in a single string. They can parry you, shield bash you, charge you, etc. The boss fights really do shine here and I don't want to spoil anything. All-in-all this is an incredible first venture into the Soulslike(with ARPG elements)genre. If this game continues to improve during early access the offering has the chance to be as much a cult classic as the Ori games the developer worked on in the past.

If you are a fan of the original you will undoubtedly be a fan of this one. There are some performance issues, but they are mostly limited to major cities unless you have outdated hardware. This is more Dragon's Dogma with better pawns and a more interesting and large world overall. The vocations all feel very good. There isn't a vocation you play in this game that feels underpowered or bad. There is no "one" vocation that is vastly better than the others like in the first game. They're all broken in their own ways.

Beyond addictive. Every game is rewarding and no backpack is ever the same. Thought provoking but not tedious. Over 200 hours in the Beta and I can safely say this early access is incredibly hearty and worth every penny.

I enjoyed every second of this experience. If you're not capable of realizing these are fictional characters in a fictional world that do not exist outside of it and appreciate it for the quality writing then you should seek therapy immediately. Eagerly awaiting more installments.

Like Monster Hunter meets Musou with a touch of what the Mana games wish they could be. This game is extremely fun. The story is mid at best but everything else about this game is exceptional. Runs like absolute butter. Even during particle heavy boss fights I didn't drop a single frame.

This is an excellent JRPG. I get it, you don't like h-games or h-anything(Hentai for the uneducated). I'm not a huge fan of those elements myself. However, it requires a patch to unlock them and without it you'll see very little of it, if any at all. What is at this game's core is an excellently written, sprawling, beautiful JRPG. I would gladly put this up against the greats in terms of writing and story. Deathpolca might be one of the greatest main characters I've ever had the pleasure of playing as. I'm not going to go into depth about any story elements because it would be an absolute shame to spoil anything. Yes, there's Lolis but there is a story here so much deeper than just about any you're going to play that I really cannot stress enough how much you should experience this story. What your friend's list thinks be damned. Turn them into people of culture and play this game right now.
