I welcome competition to the Battlefield franchise, but this cheap and clunky imitation isn't it. RIP original Delta Force games.

Dud with plenty of potential. Bethesda plays it safe again, having not evolved their formula since they released Oblivion.

This is a linear procedurally generated open world space sim-lite RPG-lite game with little to no consequences for your actions.

Pros
  • Atmosphere is basically Firefly the video game.
  • Graphical fidelity.
  • Official mod support on the way.
  • It's space!

Cons
  • Being a villain is shallow.
  • Quests are shallow and linear with no tangible consequences or variance.
  • Dialog choices are linear and often don't even match the reaction NPCs and companions have to them.
  • Very little diversity for companions, everyone has the same overall personality and code of conduct.
  • NPCs are very robotic, standing against and staring into walls.
  • NPCs and Companions barely react to anything, even events in their associated quest lines. "Hey! Hows it going!? :D" (You forgetting that Terrormorph right outside?)
  • Survey, Mining, and Planetary exploration feels like a cheaper yet more expensive experience of No Mans Sky's systems.
  • Game wants to constantly rip you out of first person even when it doesn't need to.
  • No first person body, you're just a pair of floating arm, it's 2023.
  • Your ship doesn't need fuel as it auto-regens, same with your suits oxygen.
  • Fast traveling makes the space aspect feel mostly pointless beyond forced fights.
  • No ability to exit your ship in space or do things like depressurizing the cargo hold.
  • Your ship will never be boarded (outside maybe some scripted quest events if that.)
  • Boarding enemy ships is pretty shallow, everyone is just holed up in the pilot section. One grenade and the ship is yours. (Good thing the cockpit glass is bullet proof and HE grenade proof.)
  • UI and keybindings are clunky, game even lacks basic PC options like an FOV slider which really makes this feel like a last minute console port.

This game stands poorly and is in stark contrast to the less expensive Baldur's Gate 3. Starfield is good if you like linear space exploration where you play as the good guy and don't care about the actual role-playing experience.

I look forward to official mod tools so modders can fix and enhance what Bethesda apparently wasn't able to, but for the price tag mods shouldn't be necessary for a proper RPG experience.

Better than Battlefield. DICE you should probably pay close attention, or just hire every one of these developers and put them in charge of your next game.

Sometimes quirky, sometimes disjointed, always fun. This game is tactical chaos and has every mechanical feature you'd expect from a AAA / Battlefield game, plus some milsim love too.

Whimsical and fantastical! Captures all those childhood thoughts about visiting Hogwarts and Hogsmeade and turns them into a video game. Feels like a game made by people that love the Harry Potter for people that also love Harry Potter.

There are things that I wish they had included. Sleeping in your own bed. Sitting on furniture. Greeting/taunting students a'la RDR2. More choices for companions. Companions with you 24/7 on your adventure. Quidditch would have been nice, even if just as a spectator. Regardless of these things I think the game is great and definitely worth it.

Buyer beware though, this is not Skyrim: Harry Potter and it is not Red Dead Harry Potter. It's somewhere between Red Dead Redemption and an Ubisoft open world game, leaning more towards Ubisoft open world.

Amazing milsim. It's like ARMA with a pinch of Battlefield. If you want a fast paced shooter you can play lone wolf then this game is not for you. You can expect intense infantry and armored combat with an extreme emphasis on teamwork and coordination with your squad. Mics are generally expected. Maps are vast and you will spend a lot of time running if caught without a vehicle. Just know what you are getting into before buying this, but it's a must have for anyone that's a fan of milsim games and tactical shooters.

Initial Early Access Review:
This game is SWAT 4 reborn. It's a true love letter to the old SWAT franchise. This game shows amazing potential and even in early access it is very playable and stable. Really looking forward to seeing what is in store for the future of this game.

Retail Launch Review:
Game wasn't ready for release and if I'm reviewing this game as a release build I can no longer give it a thumbs up. This game needed significantly more time in the oven. AI is still absurd aimbot wallhacking unfun garbage. Optimization is terrible. Lot of rough edges. Game has been getting better with each patch, but this was not ready to leave Early Access.

Visceral, that's what this game is in one word. This game is awesome! It's like Band of Brothers the video game - if all your brothers in arms were literally insane and or eccentric. The atmosphere is great. Gameplay is faster paced than SQUAD while also being slightly more simplistic, it makes up for that by being even more gritty.

10/10 game, and the developers keep implementing new systems, maps, and content.

There's a lot to dig into. Battlefield 2042 is a major shakeup in the franchise.

I've been with the Battlefield franchise since it's inception in 2002 with Battlefield 1942. I've extensively played every single Battlefield game (including the lesser known console titles.)

I don't feel like digging into the broader directional and more subjective issues I have with this entry into the series. Suffice it to say that I've never seen a Battlefield game try so hard to not be a Battlefield game. Rather, here is a quick rundown of things you might notice as a returning Battlefield player.

  • There is a Battle Pass system with seasons that will cost real money.
  • There is no class system, it's been scrapped.
  • Players play as "Specialists" known as no-pats (read the blogs)
  • There is no server browser for standard Battlefield 2042.
  • Servers disband at the end of each match.
  • There is a real chance the game has already or is going to implement SBMM.
  • Servers can reach up to 128 players for 64v64.
  • Portal mode allows you to make custom games using previous BF content.
  • There is post match specialist (player character) posing and boasting.
  • Pre-lobby and pre-match character animations/sounds play every time.
  • There are 22 guns - 3 sidearms, 2 LMGs. (Battlefield 4 released with 76.)
  • There are 7 Battlefield 2042 maps.
  • Maps have a lot of large open areas without cover.
  • Maps have a lot of underutilized playable space.
  • Weather can affect visibility in a very real way.
  • AI turrets and robodogs are inefficient.
  • AI don't fill player squads.
  • AI don't use abilities.
  • AI have very limited intelligence.
  • Objectively terrible UX design and flow.
  • Menu navigation is unintuitive.
  • Opening the "big map" is now fullscreen rather than partial.
  • Objectives on HUD block visibility.
  • Inability to control minimap size.
  • Inability to control HUD icon size.
  • Inability to control HUD scale.
  • Inability to control HUD opacity.
  • Inability to assign double keybinds for keyboards.
  • Inability to notify downed teammates that you will revive them.
  • Inability to see if medics are nearby when downed.
  • Inability to crouch sprint.
  • Inability to take supine positions.
  • Inability to roll after a fall.
  • Inability to lean/peak around cover/corners.
  • Inability to dive underwater.
  • Inability to grab ammo directly off of ammo carriers.
  • Inability to control squads.
  • Inability to select the squad you want to join.
  • Inability to see where your gunner is aiming when driving/piloting.
  • Inability to have select and quick throw grenades on different keybinds.
  • Inability to free-look in the cockpit when piloting.
  • There is no way to stay with your squad of randoms at the end of a match.
  • There are no first person melee take downs.
  • There are no water maps.
  • There are no boats or watercraft - only hovercraft.
  • There are lens flares that can not be turned off.
  • There are odd graphical hazes to objects like trees (depth of field?)
  • Weapon handling feels inconsistent. (Subjective)
  • Environments don't feel lived in (Subjective)
  • Melee feels very clunky (Subjective)
  • There audio blending/occlusion issues. (E.G. Nearby explosions inaudible.)
  • Typical launch issues with connectivity problems and game breaking bugs.

It should be noted that many/most of inabilities listed were features in previous Battlefield entries. Including but not limited to BF4, BF1, and BF5. And sometimes these features can be traced all the way back to BF2, BF2142, BF2MC, BC, BC2, BC2V, and BF3.

Battlefield 2042 doesn't offer a lot of new gameplay to the table, but it does offer some big design philosophy changes and a lot of regression.

Multiplayer is solid. Never thought I'd recommend a Halo game that wasn't made by Bungie, but here I am.

Update December 2022: State of the game is pretty sad. Barely any new content since launch, match making is still super buggy. On the bright side coop-campaign and Forge were both added, but new maps are really needed and I don't mean Forge maps. Yet they release new 20 USD skins weekly and there's barely any customization options even if you paid for the campaign offering.

Core gameplay is pretty solid when you're not desyncing, though 343 obviously doesn't understand BTB. Maps are are chokepoint lanes with no real openness, vehicles are underwhelming with a million and one ways to counter them and maps not even big enough to justify them most the time. There's nothing on the scale of Halo CE multiplayer maps despite almost double the player count. Also CTF for me the quintessential Halo BTB mode is coincidentally the least included one in the BTB playlist.
