I’ll cut straight to the point. The game is absolutely worth full price, but you have to know what you’re getting into.

First, the positives:

- The level design is phenomenal. Not just in terms of art design or the rewards that exploration yields, but the construction of the puzzles and the way the devs layer map progression on top of itself to save you time as you advance an area.
- There are no sleep or stamina limitations. There’s no weight or inventory limit, so you can indefinitely fill it and then sort it.
- There’s an arachnophobia option (this is becoming more common, but it’s frustrating when a game with a lot of spiders doesn’t have it).
- The music is outstanding.
- There are a lot of cool things to build which expedite progress in each profession.
- There’s an interesting pet system.
- It runs extremely well and is bug free (so far that I observed).
- Multiplayer.

Now, the neutrals:

- Socialization with NPCs is quite limited. There are no romance options or deep friendship systems.
I wish you could search for items in your inventory.
- There’s a type of puzzle (slider cubes) that I wish occurred earlier and more frequently. Killing bats and rotating stone gargoyles that breathe fire grew a little tiresome. The massive cube rooms were also pretty fun.
- The main storyline ends rather abruptly with a black screen w/ text. You can keep playing, but it just feels a little less meaningful.
- There are lots of decorations to build, but they’re all outdoor items (barrels, trees, lampposts)

The cons:

- The professions don’t reward you with anything beyond money (and a type of Luma exp that you’ll collect plenty of on your own). You can’t wear the armor - there’s no buff or improvements from achieving each tier. I switched from cook to blacksmith because I wanted to wear armor, but it’s all “replica armor”. Even if it was just performance improvements like food that gives you a speed boost, resistance to hits, or loot auto pick-up I’d be fine. This feels like the biggest lost opportunity to me.
- House customization is effectively non-existent.
- There are no special events that change the town (beyond one plot related one, that’s more like a change in NPC dialogue)

Having said all of that, I deeply enjoyed my time with the game. You just have to understand you’re going into a game more focused on exploration and resource grinding than a life-sim. Hopefully, the devs continue to expand the game, but for the asking price I think it’s well worth the money even if they don’t.

If you take the time to do some achievement hunting/exploration then I'd say it's worth it. The story is decent and the atmosphere is effective. My only real issues are that all of the jump-scares, while very effective, are extremely cheap. The same loud noise is used at an absurd volume level to cement the suddenness of random non-lethal surprises without any buildup. And the ending fight is fairly clunky and quick. Overall, I'd recommend it if you know what you're getting into.

Land of Pain is an excellent walking simulator, a great adventure game, and a mediocre horror game. A creature follows you for 75% of your play time, but it's like an angry version of the Dark Spirit from BDO, which isn't very frightening. Beyond that, the gameplay loop revolves around going from location to location and reading notes or picking up items. There's a little confusion at first as you adjust to what's relevant to explore and what's aimless, but eventually you'll get the formula. Even at full price, I recommend the game - unless you're looking to get really scared. If you're looking for an eerie Lovecraftian adventure game with a great story and beautiful scenery, you will deeply enjoy this game. It takes between 3.5-6 hours to finish a blind playthrough.

Dark Souls, Doom, and Conan the Barbarian all wrapped up in one bundle? Yeah, with a few catches.

The game is immensely fun, and for $15, you can't really go wrong with a ten hour experience that yields some replayability. My biggest gripe with the game is the combat system. You cannot cancel your attacks once they've begun which can be a serious issue. There are also certain situations that punish you with hordes of mobs, situations that can't merely be handled by skill as the level design will choke you out. Outside of those gripes though, it's a pretty solid experience. Soundtrack is pretty dope too.

8/10

It's Halo Reach, baby!

It's a pretty damn good port. There are some audio issues caused by a modification to the ancient audio encoding, but aside from that what people are complaining about are either actual features from the original game or user specific issues.

7/10 Port
8.5/10 Game

Do yourself a favor and get the game.

Indisputably the best RPG of the last decade. The world is intoxicating and the story is engrossing. It's the sort of experience that when you start, you never fully want to leave.

Did you enjoy Portal?
Do you enjoy puzzles that will penetrate your mind and furiously hump your head until you find the solution through bloody sobs?
Do you enjoy philosophy and robots being terrible, terrible not-people?

Well then you've probably already played this game.
