I bounced off of Disco Elysium a total of nine times over the course of three years before finally circling back to beat it. I think it says more about me than it does about the game.

Disco Elysium's philosophy toward success is radically different from that of your average video game. You play as a deeply damaged man who, without your input, has done some terrible things. The fact that a player gets to take the reins at the start of the story does not undo that damage. Attempting to unravel the game's mysteries through the lens of one absolute disaster of a man sets you up for failure. No matter how smart you play things, and no matter how kind the dice are to you, there are no perfect outcomes...

...Which makes the moments of triumph— The small victories that you're able to wrestle out of the plot— feel all the more impactful. Disco Elysium is a game about making the best of a bad situation. A game about rolling with the punches, and doing the best you can in spite of who you are. If you are prone to save scumming in other video games, Disco Elysium will beat that habit out of you. No amount of resetting will allow you to fix the mistakes you've made.

All you can do is move forward.
