Early Access Review
Bodies despawn and/or fly around and you lose your gear; offline raiding is a nuisance that allows players to seriously set others back without interaction; the crafting and cooking systems are abysmal; AI is a little bland with just zombies and animals as enemies; respawn mechanics are probably a little too forgiving; it is far, far too easy to break the rules on official servers (selling cars for real-world money, saying slurs in general chat, etc) and too cumbersome to report players.

But the game is pretty great. Firefights are long, intense, and engaging; ballistics and combat mechanics are on the very realistic end of the spectrum and satisfying; graphics are great; map is huge, lots to explore; items mostly feel like they have an appropriate level of rarity; updates seem chock-full of new stuff and seem to release on a quick schedule, and bugs are mostly contained to non-game-breaking things.

The multiplayer for CA games has been lackluster ever since Rome 2. I am not asking for a return to Shogun 2's multiplayer, which was layered with its own mini-story: but it is essentially impossible to foster a competitive, satisifying multiplayer experience when matchmaker is very bugged and often gets stuck looking for games or on "found a game" for an indefinite period of time, has no rankings with which to match players fairly, has bugged lobbies with unintuitive user interface, and poor server performance that leads to lots of dropped or very laggy games. One of the biggest (if not THE biggest) problem with multiplayer is the fact that CA pays little to no attention to multiplayer balance. Players can really make super cheesy armies, like all gyrocopters, and win games with sheer ridiculousness. When every 3rd player fields a stupid army like that, it's not very fun. Not to mention the fact that players who are clearly about to lose can find ways to disconnect from the game and register as a draw/loss for the winner. The fact that being competitive in multiplayer rosters also requires you to buy DLC is not ideal, but I understand it's part of CA's business model; it's just outdated and leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the customer.

I love this series. CA, despite tone-deaf pressure from their publisher, has done a wonderful job with the content of the game. The graphics are lovely and a lot of the mechanics are good. The changes they've made since Warhammer I with basic army movement tools has been fantastic. Some of the ideas are half-baked and some are cheesy (I'm really not a fan of all these stupid OP lords who can just wipe out unit upon unit of regularly infantry and stuff). But for the most part they've made a really promising game. I can't say exactly what keeps them from making the multiplayer experience palatable, I can only imagine it has to do with the publisher. Deciding whether to do a thumbs up or down is difficult: I'd give it a 2- or 3-star review if that were possible, and like I said, I love the series and the game in a lot of ways, so downvoting seems a bit wrong. But because these are issues worth fixing and because they already have "Very Positive" reviews according to Steam, I'll downvote. Sorry CA, I love your games and they are exactly the sort of games that I'd love to see more popular on the market, but as a player who prioritizes a competitive multiplayer experience, considering the current state of the game I can't thumbs up. I hope after (or during) WH3 these issues get fixed, so I thought I would try to comment on it.

I REALLY WANT TO LIKE THIS GAME! It's been months since I last played it, so I don't know what theyv'ed changed since then. I am also reviewing only the AIRPLANE part of this game.

First of all, aiming is just way too hard. I have a great joystick, but have also used my mouse and keyboard as well to try to control the plane. I spent maybe 1 or two hours just trying to take off in the dumb tutorial. Hitting other planes is basically impossible, unless you're almost touching someone from behind and just spamming bullets in their general vincity, hoping maybe 10 of them graze your target. I might just really suck at this game, who knows - or there may have been some weird problem with me specially that just makes it impossible to manuever the plane with precision - but the game is simply too hard to play. No matter how much I wanted to play, how many hours I tried to get better, and how much benefit of the doubt I gave to the game, I could never get anywhere remotely close to being able to put my reticle on enemy planes with any precision, especially with the joystick.

This also happened to me in Worlf of Warplanes, so like I said before, maybe I just flat out blow or maybe there is something wrong with my computer hardware/peripherals that keeps me from playing. THe grphaics are good, the game looks like it could be fun as heck, and the subject matter looks interesting as heck. It's just too hard.

TLDR; It's impossible to shoot other planes, with either the mouse or joystick. Looks fun but is an exercise in futility.

Great game - like Civilization, but in a deeper and more historical context. Lacks Civilization's ability to branch out, expand, and explore, building your empire from the very beginning, but instead has deeper mechanics focused on a shorter time peroid. More fleshed out than its cousin games like the Victoria series. Must-have for any serious strategy gamer.
