Great game, great campaign, but horrible side zombies mode.

But for a game made in 2012, they should really reduce the price. And make the DLC free.

Very fun game. Great maps and weapon customization. However, if you try to join a server you might get kicked with an error about PunkBuster. Here's a helpful guide I found:

This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite games of all time. I've beaten this game 6 times and it still remains enjoyable and compelling. The environmental storytelling, dialogue, combat, characters, powers, artstyle, and pretty much everything else are perfect. Simply put, I love it. If you have $10 to spare, buy it, you won't regret it.

Overall: 10/10

I really wish there was a sideways thumb on Steam.

There's no doubt that Half Life 2 is one of the most iconic games of all time, and it is well-made at certain points. It essentially kickstarted Valve's era of making memorable games built off of the Source engine (which is still capable of making great environments to this day), and this game does have great set pieces and level design.

When I first reviewed this game after beating it, I gave it a perfect 10/10 on the count of me never having played Half Life 1 before, and the fact that I had learned of all its in-jokes from playing so much Garry's Mod. 212 hours later, multiple deep dives into this game's cut content, and several playthroughs of Half Life 1 later, Half Life 2 just does not stand on its own for me.

So why am I re-reviewing this now, you ask? To answer that, I'd like to ask you something; What did Half Life 2 even innovate? Why did this game NEED to come out as it shipped in 2004?

You might say, "Because of the physics!" Alright, cool, but Psy-Ops, Postal II, and Hitman had physics engines long before this game did. "Oh, but they weren't as well used." All this game uses its physics engine for is overusing the gravity gun, counter-weight puzzles here and there, and an overrated zombie town. Sure, it's great to use the gravity gun to chuck physics objects at enemies and send them flying with all of the rather conveniently-placed barrels and pallets strewn everywhere, but that wears off once you realize that using the shotgun and pulse rifle is always going to be the dominant strategy.

The weapons are actually where I have the most amount of grievances with Half Life 2. In Half Life 1, you began with your standard pistols, SMGs, a shotgun, and grenades. All of them were viable even going into the later chapters, but where it really shone were the experimental weapons, like the Tau Cannon and the Alien Grunt's Hive Hand. The difference between these weapons and the Gravity Gun in Half Life 2 is that the developers didn't rub in your face how cool it was, they just introduced them when the time was right and when it made sense to give you these new weapons. The expansion packs did even better with this, introducing the Barnacle, Shock Roach, and Displacer Cannon in Opposing Force that allowed you to traverse the levels in new ways and were legitimately good alternatives to your standard hitscan guns.

Given all of this, how does Half Life 2 handle its weapon roster? A bug ball that doesn't even need to be used for the chapter its in, and a physics gimmick that overstays its welcome since it's given to you not even halfway through. Instead of coming up with cool alien weapons for the enemy to use, they have them shoot pellet guns at you for the entire runtime. There is no point to this, you've already committed to the alien invasion plot, you wouldn't spoil anything by having more than ONE futuristic gun for the player to use. That isn't to say Half Life 2 has nothing satisfying to its gunplay, it certainly does when it comes to providing visual feedback, but at some point it becomes repetitive to shoot the same exact grunt over and over.

Now let's get to the story, which is one thing the game always gets praised for. Ah yes, because I remember the best part of Half Life being the first chapter where nothing happens for 10 minutes before the game lets you get to the good stuff. In Half Life 2, Valve decided to make the most boring part of Half Life into two chapters of dialogue that Gordon can't be a part of, and thus can't connect us with in any meaningful way.

"Oh, ha ha ha, isn't Barney so silly, the way he always said he'd buy you a beer and how Gordon totally knows who he is despite every security guard in Black Mesa being the same character model?"

It's insulting to your intelligence, and it's tedious to listen to each time you play through the game. Half Life 1 kept character dialogue out because Valve knew the limitations of Gordon not being able to speak, and it was about escaping a stressful disaster scenario where there isn't time for lengthy dialogue. Half Life 2, on the other hand, has the characters put on a smug face every time they reference a random detail about the first game or make a quip that makes you either cringe or smile along with them the first time and only the first time.

The last thing that sucks a lot of the joy out of Half Life 2 for me is the setting. This game went through a lot of changes to its art style and vision during its 6 years of development, and I'd blame the leak for a lot of this. The Combine are just not that interesting, nor are they anywhere near as oppressive as everyone says they are. This is supposed to be an apocalyptic story of alien oppressors controlling the Earth as its natural life is dying off, and yet:

-The Coast is almost perfectly intact, with rather decent water levels given the 20 year gap between these two games
-City 17 is in really good shape despite the 7-hour-war that took place offscreen destroying cities and supposedly introducing Xen fauna into the Earth's ecosystem
-Every character distracts from it by making jokes and doing nothing but praising Gordon as a messiah despite him being a large part of the reason for why the world is as ♥♥♥♥♥♥ as it is.

Something tells me that this is because of the playtesters Valve hired. They had all these amazing concepts for returning enemies from the first game like Bullsquids, Houndeyes, and Gargantuas as well as entirely new enemies like the Hydra and Combine Guards and Stalkers, but all it took was a playtester saying "Hydra isn't fun because I don't feel like God when I fight it" for any ideas to get dropped. Because Valve couldn't bear the idea of you not feeling like the reincarnation of Jesus, any sense of futility or hopelessness against the state of this world can't last for more than 20 minutes, and any plot threads from Half Life 1 were dropped because too many people cried over the Xen chapters. Because of this, HL2's enemy roster ended up being zombies, antlions that die in one hit from a shotgun, and humanoids with zero personality. It really has not aged well.

So, what's my new verdict on Half Life 2? It is good if you're a fan of the franchise, but it is not the greatest game ever made by any stretch, nor was it really all that influential. It certainly has its moments, but I'm glad people can now realize that it is not a proper sequel to Half Life and the marketing made it look much better than it was. I highly recommend you to play the Episodes, though, and chances are I'll make a review of those that'll be far more positive, because I think even Valve was disappointed with the direction this game had to go at the last minute and wanted to give it a make-over.

I Love This

This is probably one of the best, most wholesome multiplayer experiences. If you're looking for a reason to replay HL2, give this a shot. The only problems I have are the occasional crashes and some input lag. Although, for me those issues aren't too common. Another reason I love it is because it's hilarious. Imagine watching Alyx getting mauled by a Hunter and then hearing like 4 or 5 rebels yelling incoherently, it's amazing.

This game does something pretty cool by making Ravenfield a multiplayer. It sucks that this isn't in the game already. But the reason I'm downvoting it is because literally 2 weeks after launch the servers are dead. I only got to play one game and it was okay.

If the servers get revived, definitely go get it. But if things stay as they are, don't get it.

Looks pretty sweet in-game. Looks even better when you're playing as the Mercs faction. I recommend it!
