This game is charming, creative and, most importantly, fun.

I don't have much experience with typing games, but multiple difficulty levels (for the typing and the survival horror gameplay, individually!) help to find the experience that's just right for your group. Additionally, the devs have clearly thought about the implications of having a typed control scheme - on top of their differing strengths and weaknesses, weapons also have individual typing profiles and interactions. For instance, a typo with a melee weapon requires you to backspace ("pulling back" your swing) before you can attempt another attack, while a typo with a ranged weapon causes you to misfire and waste a bullet, but immediately clears your typing space. As a result of things like this, the weapons (and the characters that use them!) all feel like they handle differently. Movement feels surprisingly smooth, too (If still "clunky" in a fairly traditional survival horror kind of way.)

All in all, this game offers a unique, well-considered type of gameplay that's very much worth checking out, cleverly mixed with a lot of Indie horror B-movie style charm. It's a strong entry to the survival horror genre, and I hope to see the developers push this further! There's a lot of extra potential they could tap into here, if they're so inclined.

Witch Booba.

Putting those two great reasons to get the game aside for a moment, Dead Estate is a masterful execution of the bullet hell roguelike genre popularised by games like Nuclear Throne and The Binding of Isaac. Controls and gameplay flow are both tight, every playable character manages to feel unique without breaking *so* far from the mold that you can't compare them to other characters, items are balanced well (There's very, very few "bad" items - the exceptions are joke items that fill out the item pool without flooding it and without actively hurting you, and items that offer you a tradeoff that *might* suck for your current character) and the game manages to exert a sense of pressure on you without going overboard with it (Chunks is dangerous, but he slows down in rooms that still have enemies in them to give you a chance, and never follows you into boss rooms or shops, meaning you still have some breathing room).

If you enjoy bullet hell roguelikes at all, absolutely grab this game, because you won't regret it. ... Also, booba witch. Did I mention that already?

The Surge 2 is an extremely solid soulslike, with somewhat faster and *much* more visceral combat.

Taking place 2 months after the first game, you play a customized character (The plot recognises the background you choose in dialogue) unlucky enough to be on a plane called Flight 221, which crashes into its' destination of Jericho City. Once you wake up, you quickly notice things aren't right at all.

Combat is about as soulslike as it looks, although it arguably has more Bloodborne in it - dodging has no iframes, but enough speed to make up for it, for instance, and your character is generally far more agile and responsive than any of the chosen undead, promoting a somewhat more aggressive playstyle. The most notable gimmick is dismemberment - lock on to an enemy, and you can target individual limbs. If a limb takes enough damage, and you have an energy bar (built up by performing attacks, and also used to charge and use implants - the game's equivalent of estus and magic) you can perform an instakill move to cut it off.

Unarmoured limbs take more damage, as you might expect... But if you aim for the *armoured* limbs, or the enemies' weapon arm, cutting that part off allows you to loot that weapon, the schematic to that armour piece and materials. This means that in every fight you have a choice - aim for the weakpoints to end the fight quickly, or draw it out in the name of more treasure?

The easiest explanation for what Remnant is: Take Dark Souls, mix it with Left 4 Dead or Vermintide, and then toss in some Diablo-esque procgen/looting-shooting.

Progression feels extremely souls-esque, "bonfires," "Fog gates" and all, and the game primarily differentiates itself by having a larger focus on the gunplay and exploration. The controls are solid and smooth, and (at least so far as I've played) none of the enemies or bosses use a cheap "gotcha". Procgen, and the ability to reroll your campaign at will (Sending you back to the first non-tutorial mission, resetting the map and what sidequests/items you might find on the way and scaling the enemies back up to you) give the game a good amount of longevity.

You can play multiplayer with up to 2 other players, and the game's netcode is surprisingly good - loot drops are shared, with the sole exception of ammo. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell there's no ways to communicate ingame - something like Dark Souls' gesture system would be a good addition here.

All in all, Remnant is an extremely solid, fun game, which manages to take the soulslike formula and do something genuinely new with it.

It's monster hunter, but on PC and with tons of QoL changes and some new toys for each weapontype that don't completely change the game (Hello Generations).

Kill your enemies and wear them as a hat. Use your enemyhat to kill more of your enemies.

Don't let the rumours fool you, the game is far from dead, and it's probably one of the better-designed MMOs out there right now. The fact it's still alive despite it's disastrous launch and equally disastrous F2P relaunch speaks as to it's quality.

London, late 1800s. Bats have stolen the city, taking it to deep and eldritch caverns far below the earth. Socialites rub shoulders with devils, and death is often an inconvenience at worst.

This is the setting for Sunless Sea, a roguelike from Failbetter Games. If you've played Uncharted Waters, it is a lot like that series - you sail from place to place, looking for opportunity for trade and new land. Where this game truly shines, however, is the story and writing. Fallen London, the game that inspired this one, is text-based - and it shows. The writing is witty, atmospheric and clever.

The gameplay is clearly not the main focus of the game, but it feels solid and fun - if slow and, at times, overreliant on opportunities the writing gives you. If you simply want a sailing/economy simulator, you may be better served looking elsewhere. However, those who take to zailing the Zee for stories and atmosphere will not be disappointed.

All in all, I would wholeheartedly recommend Sunless Sea to anyone looking for a little more substance in the writing, as well as anyone who wants to experience a truly unique setting. You're bound to come back with an interesting Zee-Ztory or two.
