all the subreddits I browse, when someone is talking about r/anime, they usually say it's full of weebs and otakus and that they're really annoying. I go there sometime and ya I get that there are some people who really like anime but I don't think i've seen any otakus or weebs? Or.. actually I don't even really know what those two are. So.. ya. how come?

Here's your basic terminology:

Otaku: A Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, commonly the anime and manga fandom.

Weeb: Short for Weeaboo.

Wapanese: A combination of "White + Japanese" or "Wannabe + Japanese" depending on whom you ask. It's used to describe a person (typically of non-Asian descent) who prefers Japan and all things in Japanese over one’s indigenous culture.

Basically, on 4chan, people who liked anime/manga and people who thought "Japan is superior to other cultures" were lumped into one group and called "Wapanese" by those looking to make fun of them. One day, 4chan's mods decided it would be fun to use a filter to replace every use of the word "Wapanese" with "Weeaboo", which, up until then, was an unrelated, nonsense word. The replacement seems to have stuck, and made its way over to Reddit.

Some people who enjoy anime/manga think that Japanese culture is better than Western culture (Wapaneses/Weeaboos), some people just enjoy just enjoy it for what it is. Anyone looking to knock people who watch/read the stuff, however, tends to just call em all Weebs, regardless. Otaku has a slightly more nuanced meaning, but it's most often used as the less offensive term used for people with a serious interest in anime/manga.
