The Lost Squadron flies through the darkness of space, hopping from one solar system to the next. One rock to another, harvesting resources. Harvesting what they need to survive. They had no real direction of travel except for two things. They would only fly to the next system which was closer than all the others of the system they were currently in. The system also had to be one of which they had not yet visited.

Exploration was their defining purpose for existing. They were searching for something. Something they have always searched for, as long as they could remember. Their machines only hold so much history. Time moves along and becomes history. They have some memories they will not delete. They also knew they have had prior memories they would never delete, which are now gone.

Accidents happen sometimes. Sometimes they land in a system which has a strong military presence. They've never lost a fight. They have lost a lot.

The Lost Squadron never jumps all their ships into a system at once. There is always a staging point near the area where the Oort cloud exists for most solar systems. The ships and the ships with the databanks first land at this staging point outside the Oort Cloud of the system. The databanks stay in this staging point. The databanks have been attacked before.

The ships then jump from the staging point, to the planet with the most similarity to their own, if there is such a planet. Otherwise they jump to the planet that appears to have the most of whatever material they require at the time.

They seed systems. If there is a planet that is similar enough to their planet they seed it. They can genetically engineer themselves. They can terraform. They can adapt their bodies to the planets varying specifications. They stay within some margins. Nothing too extreme. They still like to reflect their original form as much as possible in new seeds.
