I played DD a bit in the past. I would say it sucks completely playing with people above your level early on. Later however a few levels in between is not that big of deal.

It's been quite a while since I've played so there may have been balance patches that addressed some of my concerns with the game, which were mainly that I only had fun playing as the Mage. Laying down towers was my favorite part and the Mage has the best towers.
