Pojam „Tribali“ se često susreće u radovima vizantijskih i drugih evropskih autora Srednjeg veka, koji se isključivo odnosio na Srbe.Neki od ovih autora sasvim jasno naznačavaju da je “tribalski” sinonim za “srpski” Nikita Honijat (1155-1215) u svojoj istoriji o vladavini cara Jovana Komnina navodi sledeće: "... Kratko nakon toga, vodio je pohod protiv naroda Tribala (koji se takođe mogu nazvati i Srbima) ..." Mnogo kasnije, Dimitrios Halkokondilis (1423–1511), pišući o hrišćanskom plemiću koji je primio Islam, kaže: "... Taj Mahmud, sin Mihajla, je Tribal, što znači Srbin, po svojoj majci i Grk po svom ocu." I Mehmed II Osvajač pominje Tribaliju u svojim opisima pljačkanja Srbije.

The term "Tribali" is often encountered in the works of Vizantian and other European authors of the Middle Ages, which exclusively referred to Serbs. Some of these authors quite clearly indicate that "tribal" is synonymous with "Serbian" Nikita Honijat (1155-1215) in its history of the reign of Emperor Jovan Komnin states the following: "... Shortly thereafter, he led a crusade against the Tribal people (which can also be called Serbs) ..." Much later, Dimitrios Halkokondilis (1423–1511), writing about the Christian nobleman who received Islam, says: "... This Mahmud, the son of Michael, is Tribal, which means Serb, after his mother and Greek after his father." And Mehmed I the Conqueror mentions Tribali in his descriptions of the plundering of Serbia.
