The Royal Welsh Fusiliers where founded in 1689 as part of the Prince of Wales division. This Regiment was numbered the 23rd foot despite being one of the oldest regiments in the regular British army. Although this regiment has the name welsh only about half came from Wales and it and other regiments like it where led by the Prince of Wales who wasn’t Welsh. The Royal Welsh served in the war of Spanish succession fighting in the Lowlands South of Holland. After this war it received the title of Fusiliers and received a Royal accolade for its performance. With this the 23rd was seen as an elite infantry regiment. Their uniform looked much like the one shown in the picture but a Hackle was worn on the headdress and they wore overlapped black ribbons on the back of the uniform near the collar the ribbons where seven inches long for regulars and 9 in for officers. The mascot of this Regiment is a goat in which in tradition dates back to at least 1775 the goat had seniority over the regulars and attended to by the goat major. The Royal Welsh Fusiliers later served in The revolutionary war taking fighting in many of the most notable conflicts such as the battle of bunker hill where the regiments company of Light infantry and Grenadiers where used as Elite reserve and nearly destroyed. The Royal Welch Fusiliers are still a company today and most noted for their performance in WW1.
