The London and North Eastern Railway Thompson Class B1 is a class of steam locomotive designed by Edward Thompson for medium mixed traffic work. These 4-6-0's were designed to replace the aging fleet of non-standard locomotives from many pre grouping regions, mostly the aging 4-4-0's, the D49's, and more. Through standardization, the class become over 410 strong, making them the second most mass produced 4-6-0 of any class on the british isles.

The B1's were very fast too for their work, reaching speeds up to 90 MPH on some areas of the networks, and having such a light axle loading, meant they could go to many other places some other engines couldn't.

That being said, it made them rather light on their feet, and their massive fireboxes meant that mainline crews who were well known for strength were optimal for driving these machines.

While only 2 survive in preservation, their impacts on BR were not gone un-noticed, with the last ones being withdrawn in 1967.

The GWR 4073 is a class of 171 express locomotives drafted by Charles Collett and built for the GWR between 1923 and 1950. Unlike locomotives, their was no prototype, with the GWR ordering a batch of 10 locomotives with the first one being out-shopped in August of 1923 being named "Caerphilly Castle". GWR 111 was rebuilt into a Castle in 1924, being renamed to "Viscount Churchill", Three Stars wear also rebuilt but kept their names. Withdrawals began in March of 1950, the last castle was withdrawn in December of 1965. Eight are preserved today.

The Great Western Railway 2900 Class or Saint Class, which was built by the Great Western Railway's Swindon Works, incorporated several series of 2-cylinder passenger steam locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward and built between 1902 and 1913 with differences in the dimensions.

As we all know, the history of the GWR Saints coincides after the introduction of the Deglenn Compounds of france, as Churchwood was, at this point in time, experimenting with the 4-4-2 "Atlantic" configuration on many of his designs. The Saints here were one such design of this caliber. The Saints start out in 1902 with No. 97 "Dean". This was a prototype, with 2 more to come, one of a more proper looking engine, and a third one (171), with a parralel boiler and firebox. It wouldnt be until 1905 that the first of the production saints would be outshopped until 1913.

These came in four distinct batches, each being named in a different manner of names and meanings.

Scott (Batch 1): Named after the Characters in the novels of "Sir Walter Scott"

Ladies (Batch 2): named after historical, mythological or poetical 'Ladies'.

Saints (Batch 3): The name that sticks to the class and are named after Saints.

Courts (Batch 4): named after famous Courts (i.e. mansions).


What has been delivered is the converted / Saint - Court series of locomotives incorporating a curved frame and Swindon No. 3 Boiler. The last of this entire class was to go in 1953, with no original examples surviving. By the late 1940's, all members of the saints would be converted to the famous 4-6-0 type the GWR was known for, keeping them alive until the start to the middle of BR.

As we all know, a replica was made, No. 2999 "Lady of Legend", was built from a hall at Didcot, and can be seen on many heritage railways.

The LMS Stanier 9F was a class of 3 2-10-0 heavy freight locomotives built within 1936. However, they were designed within the days of the LMS, but were built by an outside contractor.

The concept of the design was to lug heavy trains within the heart of the midland region. However, the board of the LMS didn't want to invest in a larger design for freight work, when the 8F proved reliable enough, thereby none being built under the LMS.

One outside contractor however saw potentital within the design, and the Pine Mountain Railway had requested the diagrams for this design. The first one rolled out of Rosewill works in 1936. Already having one 8F, this proved to be a great step in the future.

However, modifications were needed with the design. In 1937, the design was tweaked to have a higher boiler pressure of 250 PSI, instead of the usual 225. This, combined with a slightly larger firebox, increased its heating surface area, and thereby gave it a power classification of 9F, making the most powerful single framed locomotive in the country, only being outpulled by the Standard 9F of 1957.

A total of 3 were built by the end of 1940's, and were given the number's 7800 - 7802. This design was a great asset to helping in winning the war, and was proven to last into the late 1960s.

However, once word of this mythical design was heard to the ears of some close controllers, the design was once again put into production, with now 6 times more in service, than what was made, with a grand total of 18 locomotives built in Rosewill, with possibly more to come.

The GWR Kings were a class of 30 4 cylinder 4-6-0 express locomotives built between 1927 to 1936 in three batches. These locomotives were built to hall heavy express trains from London to the west of England and on the Chiltern mainline to Birmingham and Wolverhampton. No.6000 "King George V" the first member of the class, was ship to North America in August of 1927 to take part in the Baltimore and Ohio railroad's centenary celebrations. She came that same year with a brass engraved bell. Withdrawals began in 1936 with No.6007 "King William III" being in a accident witch the locomotive was to far gone to be repaired, she was cut with a new member taking her place. BR started withdrawing the class in 1962, by December of that year all 30 members have gone. 3 of the 30 members have been preserved.
