Do i just have to hold out until the waves finish or do i have an objective when defending nodes? I normally get to wave 5 and get overun if i don't have a full squad

Anyone able to recommend a game like this but with more depth and emphasis on resource management? Perhaps this style of gameplay but with base building/management looting and trading? The tactical aspect of this looks okay, but I feel it's quite limited in scope. Could do with a few more layers of complexity. I would probably get into it more if character development was more intimate and more nuanced. Like stats, specializations, character customization options, personalities, quirks etc....
