I appreciate the effort for a 1st shmup. Something you may want to considering is adding a louder more distinct explosion SFX for both destroying enemy ships and for when the player ship is destroyed. Audio feedback is a big part of getting the "feel" of a shmup right. Currently the most pronounced SFX in-game is picking up crystals and not much else....
