Fun game, does a good job conveying the desperation and stress of being a mortal in the World of Darkness hunting its monsters, without being a grimdark slog. Especially fun for someone familiar with the other lines in the setting, as getting to see Garou from the eyes of someone effected by the Delerium, or a Kindred's Dominate from the eyes of a victim is a compelling change of perspective.

This game is very fun and creatively written. The ending is a bit rushed, with the story feeling like it was about 95% complete before the writer ran out of time. That being said, it was very good the whole way through until that point.

I really like the mystery aspect of Hunter: The Reckoning, and I love how intense it gets. You always feel like you are outnumbered and outmatched, because you absolutely are. Because of this however, you are also underestimated and overlooked by your adversaries, and you have to use that to your advantage.

The characters are all distinct and memorable, and the plot will keep even seasoned World of Darkness fans guessing as to what might be going on.

I've already recommended this game to several people, and I really hope we get more Hunter: The Reckoning games like this in the future.

So this is the kind of game your either into and willing to look past its flaws or your not. If your trying to get into this type of game, do not buy this one, start with Parliament of Knives, Book of Hungry Names, Out for Blood, or Night Road. This game/novel is only for people already invested in the series because it has some massive narrative problems, that make it very underwhelming, still a good enough time for the price but just barely.

So lets talk about what it does well first. It starts very strong. In fact it might be the strongest start out of any of game/novels in the series. Its got good atmosphere at the start, the characters are all likable. I really enjoyed the start of the game and was super invested in what was going on.

Then we get to the middle and the narrative problems begin. There are two large flaws in the narrative. The first is everyone and their dog is eager to tell you the second you meet them that they are engaged in a secret war for a secret society. If you know the setting this is problematic because there is no reason they would tell a random they just met and hadn't vetted this info. The biggest threat to hunters is Kindred who can infiltrate and pass for human when they need to. So no hunter organization is going to tell a person they met two second ago, Hi my name is Bob, I have a secret basement where I capture and torture people who I think are supernatural, I am glad I told you this person I met in the line at the grocery store, I am sure you are not either my hated foe trying to trick me or a person who would call the cops when a person tells you they killing and torture people.

The other big issue is there is no ending. I mean that i the most literal sense, you reach the big bad, make a single choice, and get like three paragraphs describing how the choice happened and it ends. There is no explanation of how you deal with the aftermath, how anyone feels about the resolution or an and then what. It just ends.

So overall, this game/novel won't win any new fans but if you like the series you can overlook its flaws and enjoy it for what it is you can get your money's worth here.
