Feels like the genre of "ARPG" is starting to mean a lot of different things. Much like "Souls-like" and "Rogue-like", I wonder if we could normalize "Exile-like" for ARPGs that follow the Path of Exile formula...

New player here. After 18 hours I decide to give up lol Pretty overwhelming and brutal! I like the gameplay a lot and its no surprise this game is recommended by a lot players if you are looking for an ARPG to play. With a huge backlog I am not willing to invest my time on this game, but will still recommend anyone to give it a try!

Great game even though it's 11 years old. Practically the doctorate of the Diablo game series.

I have found it fun and entertaining and I am 75 years old.

This is what any ARPG wishes it could be. Excellent atmosphere, gameplay loop, complexity and dopamine releases to keep you hooked for hundreds of hours. There are so many different kinds of builds you can play, you are truly limited by your own imagination.

You will be fine creating your own build for fun at first, but should you want to do the end game (mapping, bossing, etc), you'll probably want to follow a guide.

So what are you waiting for, Exile? Pick up that weapon by your side and challenge your destiny.

Edit: In the words of a certain Blizzard employee, this game truly is 'Diablo-like'. Lol

i cant believe i have never reviewed this before. i think i was to busy playing.

I think I finally get it now.

I tried this game several weeks back and I don't think I even got to the first town. I scoffed and shut'er down. Too much. Just way too much going on.

I gave it one more try this past weekend, got to ACT 2 , and it's like the clouds opened up and the sun started shining. I took just a little bit of time to listen to the dialogue, and read, read, and read some more. Things will start clicking IF you take a little bit of time. If you can't be bothered to take some time, the game isn't for you. Point blank period. If you are complaining about the time it takes to engage with the game, then it's not for you. This isn't a game you can just hop on in 30 minute intervals. If you expect that, again, this game is not for you. Save your negative review.

If you are coming from Diablo 4 (like I did), which basically hands you everything on a gold platter (I mean EVERYTHING), this will be a difficult change of pace if you are not keeping an open mind. I was actually one of the ones that loved D4 - it has beautiful visuals, engaging sounds, and a story and cinematics that will keep you locked in. Endgame is where D4 takes a long walk off a short pier. I have maybe 1/100 of the time in PoE that I do in D4, and I can already state with confidence that PoE dunks on D4 in almost every way.

Take just 1 hour to dedicate to getting as far as you can. You will probably die. Maybe a lot (thanks Hillock), but I promise you, that pot of gold on the other end of rainbow is PLUMP.

TL;DR - this game challenges you, and it being a 2013 release, it steps far away from the 202X gaming formula of "give give give, give some more, participation trophy, no work necessary, just buy your stats and advantage, exact quest locations...etc.".

Once you rot away in short-form media world for awhile (like TikTok), it becomes difficult to sit and appreciate the longer forms of media. This isn't a developer problem, this is a gamer problem.
