I can barely contain my emotion as I write this review. The original Silent Hill 2 was an audiovisual masterpiece of immense importance to me. Not only did it help inspire my future artistic productions, but it was my window into a world far vaster than the one surrounding me: a parallel universe where I could find myself.

It was 2004, I was fifteen when, through a fortunate exchange, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams entered my life. Sunday afternoons transformed into solitary rituals: locked in my room, I would lose myself in the meticulous exploration of every game environment, absorbing every sound and visual detail. I relived James Sunderland's odyssey more than ten times. My connection with that world became so deep that I decided to get the original soundtrack CD. Those notes began to accompany my journeys to school: I still remember those freezing winter mornings, my gaze lost beyond the bus window, while 'True', 'White Noiz', 'Fermata in Mistic Air', and 'Alone in the Town' transformed the winter landscapes into something ethereal and dissociative. Silent Hill 2 called to me with a visceral force: every detail of the game resonated deeply within me, from its homages to David Lynch's universe to the disturbing distortions of reality that evoked Francis Bacon's works.

Bloober Team's Remake has accomplished something that seemed impossible: not only has it honored the original work, but it has managed to elevate certain sequences to new expressive heights. From the very first moments, I was enveloped by a wave of familiar desolation, similar to those déjà-vu moments that haunt James on his journey through the nightmare. The presence of the original masters, Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka, has given the project an aura of authenticity that shines through in every frame.

The environments drip with an almost tactile materiality: the dominant colors - green, red, and orange - paint humid spaces where mold reigns as a tangible presence. I deeply appreciated the second encounter with Pyramid Head, with James hidden in the closet. The Abstract Daddy section proves even superior to the original: the nightmarish environment, with its flesh-wallpapered walls and rhythmically moving pistons, along with the television broadcasting Angela Orosco's father's distorted words, have enriched the gaming experience in an extraordinary way.

Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 is the most precious gift that 2024 has given me.

I've always wanted to play original Silent Hill 2, but never had a chance. After finishing this game, I feel really strange, I guess there is something wrong with this town, Silent Hill.

You play as James Sunderland (like football club) who is just an ordinary guy trying to find his wife. The thing is, and this is a slight spoiler, but you literally find about it in first 5 minutes; his wife is dead and you have somehow gotten letter from her leading you to the town called Silent Hill, where James and his wife Mary spent some time together. Story is pretty vague, and you can barely understand anything all the way till the end. From what I have found so far, most of the story actually lies in last 5-10% of the game and in the endings itself. Story is good, but I didn't understand much after finishing it, so I had to use search for help. If you get one specific ending though you will pretty much understand most of it.

I mentioned that most of the story lies in endings, and there are 8 endings in total. What's really strange about this game for someone who has never played Silent Hill 2 before is how hard is to actually figure out all these different endings. I love investigating lore in games since I am a big fan of souls games, but here it's different. You need to investigate everything properly to figure out what you need to do in order to get different endings. But those hints that you get are really vague. And without guide, if you have never played original before, I doubt you will even know how to get these endings. One fake example would be: break at least 20 windows in the game in order to get ending C. It's just so random, I am not sure why you even get different endings based on some strange actions.

Gameplay itself is pretty average, but it works. For some time you will fight enemies with wooden plank with nails inside or pipe. Later you will acquire gun, shotgun, rifle etc. All in all, combat is satisfying enough. Bosses are pretty interesting and unique. Puzzles are also good. This game is kinda asking you to replay it multiple times, or at least some parts of the game, to be able to get all endings, but I don't think that game is that fun that you will have desire to replay it multiple times, once you know the story, since all these endings are pretty similar.

Atmosphere and sound effects are the best thing about the game. It's a pretty creepy game, that doesn't rely on jumpscares, and yet you will probably feel uncomfortable most of the time. Not scared, just uncomfortable. That is how this town makes you feel.

Game took me around 20 hours to beat. Performance wise I was getting 60 fps on 3070 ti, but I had to lower everything to low, cause it was stuttering a lot. Now with 7900 xtx it seems to work pretty good on epic, though I still get traversal stutter, and from what I saw it's there even on 4090, so it's impossible to remove it completely, you can just reduce it. Overall performance is fine, if we ignore traversal stutter.

Pros:

- Fantastic atmosphere and sound effects
- Characters are interesting
- Interesting story
- Solid gameplay
- Unique bosses

Neutral:

- Having multiple endings is interesting, but the steps that are required to do them in order to get them are pretty vague, and not that easy to understand or find at all

Cons:

- Traversal stutter

Verdict:

I know this is a strange thing to say, but I really enjoyed my time in Silent Hill. I probably won't go back there for now, since game isn't that replayable imo, but I will definitely go back one day, because "In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill." Amazing experience overall.

Is it me or does this game do very little to make the combat fun and good?

I'm starting to consider to give this game a negative vote due to how horrible and outdated the combat is especially when picking up things you have to stand still and wait for a animation to play. Whoever made the Combat really needs to be replaced.
